Datchworth II v Radlett CC 5th XI on Sat 27 Aug 2011 at 1.00 p.m.
Match was Abandoned rain
Match report
A century by Simon Randall in his first innings for more than a year gave Radlett fifths an excellent opportunity of winning their penultimate Division 10 game at Datchworth II, but rain bucketed down at tea-time and Radlett were consigned to relegation by a no-result.
A partnership of 104 for the seventh wicket, an extraordinary effort at this level, turned the innings on its head. As Randall accustomed himself to awkward soft conditions, the score slumped to 54 for six in the 25th over, but the rot was stopped when he was joined by Ender Tahsin.
Randall's 102 was an object lesson on how to pace an innings on an adverse pitch. Always playing each delivery on its merit, he dispatched a good bowling attack to all parts when finally set, including two consecutive straight sixes as the score began to fly along at some velocity for 23 overs.
Tahsin offered a difficult chance to slip on nought, but otherwise played sensibly with good concentration and quick running for his 30 in conditions that were never easy. Then John Mansell assisted in a quick late stand of 24 that took the score to a formidable size.
Perhaps Datchworth first realised they were in for a fight when Herts Under-15 captain Tom Colverd came on to bowl, better known at Radlett as one of the Cobden Hill colts. A tidy five overs ended with a pull for six of shocking power by Randall into a distant garden.
None of Randall's shots went into the air apart from his three sixes, two early leg-glances perilously close to catches and an uppish clip through midwicket's hands on 87 -- the only chance. The power and precision of his driving was very impressive, having made only 13 runs in his first 50 balls. The pace heated up so quickly that scorer Bill Marshall struggled to keep up the ball-by-ball analysis.
Apart from Khuz Manzoor, with a brisk 17, none of the other batsmen made his mark, but thanks to Simon a real prospect of victory emerged until a downpour extended an excellent tea and ended the match.
Randall flew back to South Sudan after a holiday to resume as a financial manager for the Save The Children fund.
