Abbots Langley III v Radlett CC 5th XI on Sat 06 Aug 2011 at 1.00 p.m.
Radlett CC Lost by 22 runs

Match report Radlett fifths suffered their second gut-wrenching disappointment in two weeks when a likely victory turned into a 22-run reverse against Abbots Langley III at Bedmond. Division 10 relegation beckons with only three games remaining.
There is a stage when clinching the right result becomes a something of a psychological problem. A run of defeats -- it's seven in a row now -- erodes confidence, even on occasions when the side is strong. Last Saturday a one-wicket defeat by third-placed Old Elizabethans II hurt, and this week a loss to the bottom side was a real blow after dismissing them for 108.
The day started with Shabbir Foyez dropping out with illness, and the morning was punctuated by a number of futile phone calls attempting to replace him with a youth player. So skipper Charlie Randall had to accept he would have only 10 men, but when the team had taken their fielding positions it was pointed out that there were in fact 11 men present.
Three days of drop-outs and slot-juggling had clearly taken their toll on the captain's counting in a week of dreadful availability. As it turned out, 10 men would probably have done just as well on a very disappointing day.
Darren Fabray and Arif Rahman made the first breakthroughs and ripped out the Abbots middle order. The Abbots captain had to retire hurt with a calf injury, Rob Millard struck two timely blows and the all-out total of 108 seemed reachable enough, though the pitch assisted bowlers when the occasional delivery went through the top.
Kevin O'Donnell, having made an outstanding club debut behind the stumps, and Millard started the reply well, and the score reached 46 before the second wicket fell. Then two top order batsmen were run out on a second run in the same over, a weird event, and within four overs Radlett had collapsed to 68 for seven.
The 'over of madness' started when Millard, batting very well for his 28, thought he heard yes instead of no and was run out in a tangle with Andy Griffiths. Then Daniel Garfield, having hit four and three off his first two balls, thought he saw Griffiths advancing for a second run to square leg (Andy had only turned very quickly as per text book) and was easily run out. Griffiths himself, the last specialist bat, then holed out on the long-off boundary two overs later.
A weak batting side never recovered from these blows and failed to land the 30 points that might have led to Division 10 safety.
