Radlett CC 5th XI v Old Elizabethans II on Sat 30 Jul 2011 at 1.00 p.m.
Radlett CC Lost by 1 wicket
Match report
Radlett fifths suffered their sixth straight defeat and lost ground again in Division 10, slipping into the bottom three in a congested relegation zone after an exciting game at Queens School Bushey.
This time the loss was only by one wicket against third-placed Old Elizabethans II, who needed nine runs to win with their last pair at the crease. Radlett fielded a stronger side than usual and more than matched their opponents.
Good batting by Rob Millard, with his first fifty of the season, and Kuz Manzoor, with a well-judged 46 on his fifth's debut, put Radlett into a strong position, but both batsmen were dismissed in consecutive overs. Heedless batting meant 166 for four became 175 for nine with 10 overs of the innings still in hand.
Though the last pair used up another five overs, a total of 189 should have been a commanding 200-plus. Critically OEs had 52 overs to reach a more reachable target than had seemed likely while Millard and Manzoor were at the crease. Much of the hard work put in by Millard, Arif Rahman, Jake Reza and Manzoor was squandered.
In the first over of the OE reply a wonderful leg-side running catch by Reza captured the first wicket, and Ender Tahsin clung on to a rasping drive at midwicket for the second, both off full tosses from Darren Fabray.
A good 'cricket wicket' gave the bowlers hope, though regular loose deliveries from the seam attack meant that Radlett were never quite in control. Skipper Charlie Randall sent down 20 overs of accurate left-arm spin, causing plenty of scares without any luck.
Lively fielding and useful interventions from Rahman, Sunesh Chaminda and Millard claimed wickets near the end, but the final blow never arrived and OEs scrambled home off a leg bye with seven balls to spare.
After so many setbacks this season it was an especially harsh blow to fail when a victory really should have been achieved. Next week Radlett play bottom-placed Abbots Langley III at Bedmond.
