Kings Langley III v Radlett CC 5th XI on Sat 23 Jul 2011 at 1.00 p.m.
Radlett CC Lost by 8 wickets
Match report
Radlett fifths suffered their fifth successive heavy defeat when they went down by eight wickets against Kings Langley III in Division 10 at Rudolph Steiner School.
This was not a surprising result in that Radlett still had not fielded a team as strong as their promotion side in Division 11 last year. Their total of 88 all out at Langley reflected the gap between the sides on a school ground not really suitable for this level of cricket. It was not as if the side did not try their hardest or that wickets were thrown away carelessly on a soft dead pitch. There was a shortage of quality and experience.
The hock-deep untrimmed outfield grass was regrettable, though on a batting day with mown grass one dreaded to think how easy runs would have been on a ground with ultra short boundaries apart from a bulge in one corner. However, the pitch conditions on Saturday had to be mastered after Radlett had been inserted. Ross Bratt resisted longest for his 24 not out and newcomer Darren Fabray produced a few blows at the tail end, the only two batsmen to reach double figures.
Fabray impressed with the new ball and Arif Rahman clean bowled a victim in the second over of Langley's reply. In the 10 overs before tea the score had reached only 12 for one, but after the break Radlett's bowlers failed to find their rhythm and the total leapt upwards. Charlie Randall bowled tidily in his first game back after missing the first half of the season through injury.
There is plenty of time left to pick up some better results and avoid an immedite return to Division 11, but that will not happen while the stronger players remain available at all levels so infrequently.
