Boxmoor II v Radlett CC 5th XI on Sat 25 Jun 2011 at 1.00 p.m.
Radlett CC Lost by 101 runs
Match report
This heavy Division 10 defeat was predictable in view of the very poor availability within the club. The shrinkage of resources is a genuine worry, and the high-ability nucleus who play as often as they can are let down by infrequent and variable support.
Without the regulars, Radlett cricket would struggle, and the selectors are well aware of their value. The less availability, the less chance of selection.
The fifths faced Boxmoor II, similarly placed in the table, on a pleasing sun-drenched village ground. The pitch was very soft after overnight rain, but playable and fair to both sides. Rob Millard decided to insert, giving Radlett the chance to field first for the first time this season.
If a couple of easy catches had been taken, Boxmoor might have been bowled out for 140 or less, perhaps still enough for victory though their bowlers might have felt more tension. As it was, a newcomer fast bowler Imran Khan returned figures of 11.4-5-9-7, finishing Radlett's innings with a hat-trick.
Sam Kutner and Satish Pandey performed well with the ball for Radlett, Kutner going for only 18 runs with a wicket in his opening 10-over spell. Pandey demolished the middle order and returned 4-40, though the leg-spinner's habit of experimenting -- disrupting his own excellent accuracy without good reason -- meant his figures were not as good as they should have been on a helpful pitch in his second spell.
Ross Bratt and Pandey struck with good run-outs, and Kutner coolly held a skier at mid-on to wrap up the innings. As usual this season, there were plenty of positives in the bowling and fielding.
Radlett simply did not have the batting strength to threaten in reply. Shabbir Foyez was dropped at midwicket in the first over, with the old ball retained, before ending up top scorer with 20. Bratt hit a couple of boundaries when the new ball was taken, but by then Khan had wrecked the innings.
It was a tough day for Andy Barnes, pal of James Mills, and the former fifths captain Vikram Rajput, both gamely filling in at short notice. The club is very grateful, especially to Vikram, who had not played for at least two years and agreed to join the side at a couple of hours' notice. Both players held a catch, and Barnes proved lively in the field. They can be proud of themselves.
With four wins and five defeats, Radlett fifths have started to slip down the table towards the relegation fringes.
