This disappointing Division 10 defeat at Queens' School was another example of Radlett V batsmen refusing to adapt to a bowler's world. This was nothing to do with ability -- just attitude.

Lee Greenland was the shining exception. He played through for a well-made 54 in an all-out total of 96, which Welwyn Garden City IV passed with six wickets down in sodden conditions. Simeon Cohen took four of those wickets with his left-arm spin. The pitch was too soft and slow for bowlers to be menacing. Batsmen generally had to make errors, and scoring runs was an awkward process. If just a couple of middle order batsmen had bothered to hang around and support Greenland to make a partnership, Radlett would have scored more runs and might well have won this match.

Most games were rained off on the day so that the table position was not affected much, though a win would have had Radlett shooting upwards. Greenland found the going easy enough by selecting low-risk shots at the right time -- no rocket science here. The batsmen who refused to concentrate and to play themselves in need to look hard at their position in the side.

Batting might be hard work sometimes, requiring mental effort, patience and even courage. It might not be fun, but the feel of winning for the side compensates. Perhaps league cricket isn't for some players in the 5th XI after all.
