West Herts III v Radlett CC 5th XI on Sat 11 Jun 2011 at 1.00 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 28 runs
Match report
A LAST wicket stand of 53 between tail-enders Sam Kutner and Harry Will proved to be the difference between the two sides in this low-scoring 'San Siro' derby between the two Division 10 ground sharers at Queens' School Bushey.
Radlett V, put in by West Herts III on a damp quirky pitch, lost Shabbir Foyez to the day's first ball, prodding a simple return catch. His fellow opener Simeon Cohen was castled in the next over, also for a duck, and Lee Greenland missed a pull shot. A score of nine for three wickets became 56 for nine, with only captain Rob Millard staying long for his score of 27.
Millard edged probably the day's best ball, but there were few excuses generally when five wickets fell in five consecutive overs. Kutner batted with more sense than colleagues higher in the order and the score began to accelerate when he was joined by Will. The pair batted with freedom, with Will hitting four fours in an over from a change bowler, and the score had reached 109 by the time he was yorked after a splendid innings of 27.
West Herts expectations of an easy victory were spoilt by this out-of-the-blue stand, and they had slipped to 35-4 when tea was taken. The momentum was firmly with Radlett, Greenland taking three catches at short extra cover off Cohen's left-arm spin, one effort a brilliant dive and scoop. Millard's diving catch at mid-off was another excellent piece of fielding.
Asad Husain and Cohen made the decisive inroads against a dispirited batting side, and the 28-run win was wrapped up by a near-miraculous slip catch by Mihir Kapadia above his head.
This success brought Radlett's tally to four wins, all against the more lowly sides, earning a place no better than mid-table. The season promises much sterner tests, and the batting continued to look fragile. With runs on the board, Radlett might test strong batting line-ups, but until there is more determination at the crease, the season will be tough.
