Little B Sahibs v Radlett CC 5th XI on Sat 04 Jun 2011 at 1:00
Radlett CC Lost by 6 wickets
Match report
This comprehensive defeat at Little Berkhamsted seemed to confirm that Radlett will do well to survive in Division 10 as the only fifth team at this level. The bowling of most sides might be too testing on this evidence.
Radlett travelled to this charming village ground -- the teas were as sensational as usual here -- with an inexperienced side. There was talent for sure on paper, but the gap between youth and competent adult players was wide enough for all to witness.
Sahibs inserted Radlett on an awkward slow pitch and they should have been made to pay. The outfield was lightning fast and the boundaries short, and Riki Shah hit three fours off the first over, all full tosses delivered by a very stiff veteran medium-pacer Steve Bowers. As it transpired the 13 runs off that one over was to represent 12.5 per cent of the final total. Bowers loosened up and claimed four wickets, and fast-bowler Toby Doughty-Doherty, a former schoolboy in Radlett, took three wickets in five balls in one match-defining over.
A total of 150-plus would have made the home side fret, but three wickets in the over reduced Radlett suddenly to 38-4. Shah was caught in two minds on the crease and nicked one, a classic fast-bowler's dismissal, Andy Griffiths was yorked second ball by a delivery he "never saw", his middle stump somersaulting, and Harry Will's attempt at a pull shot second ball resulted in a dolly catch to silly mid-off.
Apart from Griffiths' 113 in the previous match against Northwood III, no batsman has yet passed 48 this season. In Saturday's conditions batsmen had to be patient and pick off the bad ball when set. The verb 'to graft' might come from a foreign language for all the attention it gets these days from some batsmen. It was a shame that captain Rob Millard had so few runs to defend.
Ross Bratt and Shabbir Foyez put on 36 competent runs for the eighth wicket, so that even 103 was a higher score than at one stage seemed likely. Sahibs faltered at 26-3 in reply before tea, two by Sam Kutner, but there was no sustained accuracy by the attack to increase tension on the chasers.
The best reaction to a day like that, rather a waste of a sunny afternoon, might be to forget about it and try to improve next week for the 'San Siro showdown' against fellow Queens' School ground-sharers West Herts III.
