Hatch End v Radlett CC 5th XI on Sat 30 Apr 2011 at 1:00
Radlett CC Won by 94 runs
Match report
Radlett cruised to their first win as the only fifth team at Division 10 level, beating Hatch End by 94 runs at Elstree's ground.
There was much juggling of names in the morning, most notably at wicketkeeper where Tony Johnson declined a top ticket to watch Arsenal v Manchester United match so as not to let the side down. Ross Bratt agreed to stand in for Tony, who was freed to pursue his football ticket and only later realised the big match at the Emirates Stadium was scheduled for the following day in any case.
Radlett proved too strong for Hatch End, now down to one team far away from 'home' territory. Sri Lankan student Oshan Bandara, Rob Millard, Lee Greenland and Jake Reza all batted fluently to set up a formidable total of 242. That might be the highest score yet recorded by the fifths, as the over restriction had risen from 47 to 53 after last year's promotion to this division.
Arif Rahman stood in as captain in the absence through injury of Charlie Randall and Pete Wharton, delivering an important opening win. Greater tests lie ahead, but this result was welcome after so many weak displays at this stage of the season over recent years.
Sandeep Gulati was another new face to impress, shaping well with the bat and picking up four wickets with his off-spin just as the game seemed to be drifting to a possible draw. His intervention ensured the win was wrapped up with 7.4 overs remaining.
The pitch was well grassed and hard, offering variable bounce. Out of 20 wickets to fall, there was only one catch in each innings. Nearly every batsman was bowled or lbw. So a score of such magnitude was impressive, especially after three wickets fell in two overs to reduce Radlett to 109 for five. Millard and Reza fought back with a rapid stand of 65, followed by another 40 between Millard and Bratt.
