Match report Radlett lll v Old Cholemians Saturday 6 August 2011

On a cloudy day RCC won the toss and decided to field first. This is a brave move with the vagaries of the Herts League scoring system.

Old Cholms attached the early bowling with gusto so much so that young Luke Paice, had to be withdrawn out of the attack after only 2 overs.

Robin and Leders then proceeded to bowl with fire and wickets fell steadily until a 5th wicket stand. After drinks Robin turned to the badger himself and deadly Zeddly Gitay got four wickets, although he was helped by young Harry Will bowling a superb 7 over spell at the pavilion end. Shame the laws only allow him to bowl 7 overs. As wickets fell 200 came closer but thanks to some classy fielding from Khurram and Robin as well as Oz chasing the youngsters who had to run harder to get to the ball first, Old Colms were all out for 199.

I felt this was about 20 short of a good par score.

After a tea fit for a king, Radlett’s senior pro’s Warne and Edwards (not the Australian 70’s players) opened and after Oz hooked the opener for 4 was given out caught behind off the boot. A poor decision by the umpire who had looked good in the first innings. OZ was not happy.

What happened next sums up the season. Colin and Bhavin were bowled through the gate. Robin applied himself and played beautifully and Oshan and Khurram helped Robin along. Robin got frustrated and slashed at a wide one to be caught. The middle order then subsided too easily again and left it to the tail to fight.

Cometh the hour cometh the Lederman (sr) who was annoyed about batting 9. Harry Will was asked to bat 11 as he is a good bat and can play straight. Neil and Luke in partnership, were beligirent but played sensibly and hit anything off lien to the boundary, until Neil was undone by one that bounced that he could have left. Not too worry Harry and Luke were doing ok, despite some fierce appealing by the Old Cholms.

Luke smashed one into his pads, six or seven Cholms charged down the wicket and the umpire gave Luke out LBW. A disgraceful decision as the KNICK was heard all over the ground and the behaviour was totally unsporting, to end what had been until then a well behaved game.

Nothing can absolve the umpire of a poor decision, or the Cholms charging.

The threes need two wins to stay up but without application will not do it and div 6 is not the place for our 3s. We have good youngsters coming through. Ben Lederman, Harry Will, Simeon Cohen, Luke Paice, Harry Copley, but we need to be challenging for promotion not relegation. We cannot get 5 divisions behind the 2’s. Maybe Gwilym will rest some players for the good of the club.

Lets get behind skipper Robin Willis who gives 100% every game.
