Match report
Parkfield and Headstone v Radlett lll - 14 May 2011
On a lovely day the lll's travelled to skipper Willis's former Parish and are greeted by surroundings very similar to Radlett, except the clubhouse was not as nice. The boundaries are set quite strangely with the uphill one being much further than the downhill dash to the pavilion area.
We arrive early as we try and beat the Wembley traffic (all except Bhavin) and a vigorous and strenuous workout is led by Tom Jenkins, making a very welcome return to cricket.
The toss is taken and on what the groundsman describes as a very dry wicket, Parkfield win the toss and decide to insert Willis's men. Your author thinks that P&H must fancy their chances in a run chase.
What followed was something that has not happened very often in the lll's over the last couple of seasons, a fast and furious start, with Albie and Tom playing very well and despatching anything loose to the boundary. Albie has a bit of luck when on 18, he is dropped on the boundary, but this is the only chance he gives in an otherwise superb 120*.
A brilliant opening stand of 90 is ended when Tom, who had been the aggressor to Albie's accumulator, was adjudged LBW by umpire Lang, who was standing at both ends, as a corporate decision was made to have one umpire and one scorer!. I felt it a bit harsh but Bill was fair throughout both innings so I am not going to argue.
David Robinson came in and immediately showed class as he and Albie started moving through the gears and at drinks we were 126-1, with Robbo 19 and Albie 47. The drinks break did for Robbo as he played a very unRobbo shot at the first ball after the break and was snaffled by the erratic keeper Gobee Vallipuran for a lovely 19. Bhavin came in and found it hard to get the ball away but played very sensibly as Albie was now finding the going easier. When Bhavin departed for a workmanlike 19, he and Albie had added 59.
Robin came in with a point to prove but was a bit nervous until he clobbered a huge six to the long boundary from Dilshan. Shackles released and Robin and Albie added 68 in 9 overs as Robin declares at the end of the 50th over.
A sumptuous tea and a bit of the F A Cup final are watched before the P&H reply gets under way. Dan Cohen and John Armitage in his debut lll's appearence open up and are unlucky not to get a couple of wickets. Dan in particular has opener Schmid in trouble but the ball goes three times past 4th slip (We did not have one!). John bowls well but without any luck. The chase looks on after the lads finish their mandatory spells with P&H 49 -0 and Schmid looking dangerous.
Oli Robertson and Robin take up the mantle and things start happening as Oli, gets the ball to swing and skid and Robin is Glenn McGrath like in his accuracy. The breakthrough comes in a very strange manner. Albie is standing up to Oli, who bowls a leg side delivery, the batsman Chetan overbalances and Albie drops the ball, in disgust throws it at the stumps and yelps and the batsman walks. Maybe he was out, maybe he wasn't but no one appealed!.
The P&H batsmen are trying to up the run rate and are finding it hard against Oli, Robin and Shamit, who is giving the ball air and bowling quite slowly. 93 -1 becomes 93 -3 as we get 2 wickets in 2 balls, one from Oli and one a fabulous catch in the gully from Robbo to remove the dangerous Schmid for 45.
The next two bats try and score freely as Robin has set an attacking field and Prash and Dilshan use the over the top method until they are both snared by Shamus Nathwani, who has declared his eligibiltiy to play for Ireland under Phil Simmons Sr!!! One was a very good caught and bowled. With both ends open we have a chance.
However the pitch is not helping us and despite Daniel getting a well deserved wicket (he bowled better than his figures) and Oli getting his third wicket, we could not get the last three wickets.
A fine team performance led ably by Robin and with the experience of Robbo and Jenks vital. The first win is just around the corner boys.
