Radlett CC 1st XI v Hertford on Sat 19 Aug 2006 at 11:30
Radlett CC Lost 25 runs

Match report A landmark day for Radlett's Stuart Browne who claimed his 500th career league wicket, but on a day of personal celebration for the medium pacer, his team mates failed to supply the result to match, as a sub standard performance was punished with their second defeat of the season.

On a pitch affected by heavy rain in the days preceding, Radlett skipper Dan Chippeck won the toss and asked Hertford to bat first, and they were soon in trouble as Browne, a master of exploiting favourable conditions for his seamers and cutters, went to work on the top order. Steve Cordingley (15) was trapped LBW, Phil Carlson (4) chipped to mid on to be caught smartly by Graham Dill, and career victim number 500 arrived 3 balls later as Richard Cordingley was taken at silly point by Nick Fielden to spark a big celebration for the milestone. At 29-3, Radlett were well in control, but some loose deliveries allowed Steve Riddle to settle at the crease after having battled hard to survive Shane Burger's early onslaught. Hertford played positively in the second hour of the morning session, and it took a change of ends from Browne for the next breakthroughs to come as he claimed yet another 5 wicket haul when Tom Bancroft was caught at slip and Scott Ruskin fell to another Fielden catch at silly point, to leave the lunch score 115-5. Immediately on resumption, Burger removed the stubborn Riddle for a battling 60, but Radlett failed to ram home the advantage and Rob Darby played a composed innings to marshall the tail, his 48 leading Hertford to 204 all out, and some 30 or 40 more than they should have managed as Radlett's performance in the field became somewhat lacklustre. Browne claimed 5-64 off 19 overs to make it 39 for the season, Burger picked up 3-49, whilst off spinner Rob Crocker bowled 11 tidy overs to pick up 2-40 on his return to first team action.

In reply, Radlett's openers Dill and Fielden were confronted with the spin of Ruskin and Ryan with the old ball, and Fielden fell cheaply pulling to mid wicket of Ruskin. Rob Smith joined Dill and they took the score to 39 before the introduction of Bancroft's medium pace turned the game Hertford’s way, Smith and Hutchings falling in the space of 3 balls. Simon Gray once again showcased his talent reeling off some fine drives and wristy flicks as he and Dill began to wrestle control from Bancroft and his seam bowling partner Halls, but in the final over before tea Gray was bowled by Halls for 23 and Radlett were 75-4. After the interval, Shane Burger played with aggressive intent and with Dill continuing on his steady way and playing in confident fashion, things appeared under control for the 5th wicket pair, but Bancroft switched ends and took the new ball, which soon found Burgers edge, and followed up to win an LBW verdict to dismiss Chippeck. In the meantime, Dill was continuing on his merry way making light of the awkward movement and bounce that the new ball was affording. He lost Simon Jackson yorked by Halls, but then with support from Crocker, Dill launched an assault on the target almost single handedly taking the score to 172-7, before Crocker and Luffman fell to Halls. At 9 wickets down Browne was left with the task of playing out for a draw but he was harshly judged LBW with just an over remaining, leaving Dill stranded on a superb undefeated 86 not out, carrying his bat through the innings and doing it with style.

Radlett captain Dan Chippeck paid tribute to Stuart Browne's efforts:" Browney has had a superb career at Radlett, being a big part of the club since the day he arrived in 1994. He has been the premier bowler in Hertfordshire club cricket for a decade and his 500 wickets at an average of under 18 will stand comparison with the very best league bowlers of this and any other generation in this country. He is a fantastic team member, loyal and committed to the cause and he deserves all the accolades that will come his way for this fantastic achievement. Its just unfortunate that the team could not turn in a performance fitting of the occasion. We were well below par on the day and will need to improve in the run in if we are to go on and win the league title."

So, Hertford ran out 25 run winners to consolidate their mid table position, whilst Radlett's lead at the top of the HCPL Division 2 East was cut to 10 points as a result of second placed Welwyn hammering North Mymms. With 3 games to go, the race is well and truly on for the title, with the top two slated to meet on the final day of the season. Next up for Radlett is the long trip to Sawbridgeworth this Saturday.
