Hertford v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sat 17 Jun 2006 at 11:30
Match was Drawn

Match report Radlett got the thin end of the wedge in this drawn HCPL Divison 2 east fixture, a stumbling batting performance failing to chase down a very gettable target of 212 at Hertford's Balls Park. Going well early on in the chase the visitors were well placed to record their 4th league victory of the summer, but the loss of Robert Smith for a classy 44 , run out in controversial circumstances, triggered a middle order collapse that turned the tide of the game as 74-2 quickly became 89-6. Shane Burger and Graham Dill set about repairing the damage, and took the score to 127 before Burger fell victim to Canagasbey's googly, clean bowled for 24. Skipper Dan Chippeck helped Dill add another 41 but fell as the run rate required was rising, as did keeper Colin Warne, but Dill playing with a calm assurance throughour batted out the final overs to finish 51 not out, and in company with last man Stuart Browne helped to secure a draw and keep Radlett's unbeaten league record in tact. Spinners Richard Cordingley and
Jon Ryan were the pick of the attack with 3 wickets a piece.

Earlier, after Hertford won the toss and elected to bat, Stuart Browne did the early damage with the new ball, picking up the first 4 wickets with the total on 78. Rob Darby and Tom Bancroft then combined for a partnership of 62 before Darby fell to the left arm spin of Haydn Smith for a tidy 52, Smith then claiming the wickets of Scott Ruskin and Phil Carlson in quick succession to finish with 3-31. Browne meanwhile was toiling mafully in sweltering conditions, bowling an exemplary line and length and deservedly
bagged a 5 wicket haul at a personal cost of 79 from a marathon 30 over stint. However as the heat took its toil towards the end of the allocated overs, Bancroft accelerated to finish on a well made 68 not out, and he added a crucial 48 runs at the end with Richard Cordingley (22 not out) which ultimately put a target on the board that proved out of reach later on.

A dissappointed Radlett captain Dan Chippeck commented :"After restricting them to 211 on a fast scoring ground I fully expected us to successfully chase down the target, but if we are honest with ourselves our batting lacked application and ruthlessness, as well as some thought at times. We failed to capitalise on fine spells of bowling from Browne and Smith, and to that end they have every right to feel somewhat let down. However, the spirit and determination shown to hang on for a draw and remain unbeaten in the league shows that we are not short of fight"

Radlett host Sawbridgeworth at the Brunton Memorial Ground at Cobden Hill this Saturday in their next HCPL Division 2 East fixture, and start the game in second place 15 points behind leaders Welwyn Garden City.
