Radlett CC 1st XI v Hemel Hempstead on Sat 13 May 2006 at 11:30
Radlett CC Won 1 wicket
Match report
Radlett opened their Home Counties Premier League Division 2 East campaign with a nail biting 1 wicket victory over a battling Hemel Hempstead. Chasing a moderate total of 167 for victory, openers Haydn Smith (38) and Nick Fielden (37) built a solid foundation, and at 128-2 with Steve Lowe and Rob Smith at the crease and in good form, Radlett appeared to be cruising to victory. However both incumbents fell in quick succession triggering a mini collapse as left arm spinner Nick Hodgins and medium pacer Duncan Howard exerted a vice like grip on the Radlett middle order with their unrelenting accuracy and fierce competitiveness. Brenden Hutchings steadied the ship and appeared to seal the win with a mighty six over long off, but 3 wickets fell for 1 run leaving last wicket pair Robert Crocker and Stuart Browne at the crease with 3 runs to get. Displaying cool heads under pressure, they got Radlett over the line with 3 singles, Browne steering the winning run with a delicate late cut past the
outstretched arm of Hemel skipper Giles Berry.
Earlier, Radletts opening bowlers Browne and Shane Burger turned in immense efforts each bowling 24 overs to claim 9 wickets between them as Hemel Hempstead were bowled out in 58 overs, Browne claiming 5-61 and Burger 4-55 both displaying excellent stamina to sustain accuracy during their lengthy spells. Guyanese opener Ricardo Mohamed was the mainstay of Hemel's innings, his 71 featuring some fierce straight drives. It was his dismissal, lbw to Browne just after lunch, that triggered a collapse which saw Hemel's innings subside from 102-2 to 166 all out.
Radlett skipper Daniel Chippeck commented: " To say I am relieved would be an understatement as it was vital we started the league campaign with a home victory. Despite making really tough work of the chase it was excellent to see us get home, winning a tight finish, which augurs well for the season. Credit to Hemel for fighting all the way and making it a thrilling finish for the spectators." Radlett travel to Hoddesdon this coming Saturday.
