Radlett CC Stumpies v Potters Bar on Sun 05 Dec 2010 at 11.00
Radlett CC Lost 23 runs
Match report
The penultimate league game of the season for Stumpies saw them take on Potters Bar. Stumpies won the toss and elected to bat. The lovely Derek was scoring, and top team-mate, Sue, was cheering Stumpies on from the gallery. Stumpies also enjoyed some support from Willows.
After some changes in personnel, the captain wanted to keep existing batting partnerships together (so Alex and Piya, and Louise and Laura remain paired), so Cath batted with Lucy Wilson. A tough start with losing a wicket on the first ball, meant an uphill climb got a little harder. Still the partnership set about building an innings. However, too many dot balls (9 or 38% of the balls faced by the pair were dot balls) meant that not enough runs were scored, with the opening partnership putting on a 4-over total of 27 runs for the loss of 2 wickets.
The next pair of Alex Hampton and Piya Haria stepped up to the mark, and set about constructing a very mature innings. From cracking shots that ‘boomed’ the back wall, to elegant cuts, they put Stumpies back in the game. Their aggressive approach resulted in a feisty 56 runs for the loss of just 1 wicket.....top work. The total was now running at 183 for 3.
The final pair of Laura Gurney and Louise Penney were pegged back in the final 3 overs. Too many dot balls (11 or 46% of the balls faced by the pair were dot balls) meant that valuable runs weren’t scored. Stumpies posted an 11 over total of 196 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. Against any other team this would have been enough, but Stumpies now faced the best batting attack in the league.
Still, Stumpies went into their fielding with a positive outlook that Potters Bar were going to have to work hard to win the match. Potter Bar’s opening pair scored heavily despite some lovely bowling by Piya Haria who got a wicket in the first over. It is fair to say the Potters Bar game out with ‘all guns blazing’, and racked up 67 runs of 4 overs for the loss of 1 wicket.
The second pair took on the baton, and amassed 54 runs off 4 overs. Stumpies did get 2 wickets by way of run out, but by now they had 221 for 3 on the board. They final pair clearly had a plan to protect their weakest batter, and also to protect the score that they’d already posted, so one player blocked at the walls but did not run...just picking up single runs. Piya and Alex bowled the final 3 overs, and took 3 wickets for their efforts. Despite Stumpies holding faith until the final over Potters Bar posted 219 runs for the loss of 6 wickets, winning by 23 runs.
Captain, Cath McNeill was proud of the team’s effort, but knows that Stumpies will have to display a greater level of desire and passion across the whole Stumpies team....every single player needs to contribute more in the cup final (also against Potters Bar). More than anything, Stumpies musn’t be intimidated by the hard-hitting Potters Bar. They can be beaten, but Stumpies must score more runs. Of the all the balls faced by Stumpies, 36% resulted in no runs being scored....simply not good enough if Stumpies want to beat Potters Bar in the cup final.
Special mentions go to Piya and Alex for their superb performance with the bat (Cath spent alot of her time applauding and jumping up-and-down (with excitement and pride) in the cage while they batted). They both displayed great skill, focus, passion, and sheer determination....and it certainly paid-off....very well done. Some new nicknames of ‘Boom-Boom’, and ‘Bam-Bam’ could be coming their way
Bring on the cup final Potters Bar....Stumpies are coming to ‘get’ you!!!!!!!
