Radlett CC Stumpies v Hemel B on Sun 14 Nov 2010 at 12.00
Radlett CC Won by 66 runs
Match report
Another league game, and this time Stumpies took on the mighty Hemel B (they are mostly aged 13, but don’t be fooled....’if you’re good enough, you’re old enough’). Stumpies were put into bat. Stumpies knew the opposition were going to be no pushover, but were more confident than the first time that we played them (in the cup quarter-final) when Stumpies only won by 6 runs.
The opening partnership of Cath McNeill and Sue Benson put on a useful opening 4-over total of 56 runs. The next pair of Piya Haria and Alex Hampton put on a respectable 37 runs over the next four overs, despite the frustration of a huge number of wides bowled during their partnership (10 wides), which restricted the number of runs they could score.
The final pair of Laura Gurney and Lucy Wilson battled hard to add an extra 17 runs off 3 overs. Stumpies innings total of 211 off 11 overs, for the loss of just 3 wickets, provided enough opportunity for Stumpies bowlers’ to put pressure on Hemel’s batters going into Hemel’s innings.
Stumpies put Hemel’s first batting pair under huge pressure from the beginning, by taking 4 wickets in the first 2 overs (Laura took 3 in one over). Some fine fielding was becoming evident and Lucy Wilson (behind the Stumps for the very first time.....’duck to water’ springs to mind) had a very bright start. The first pair ended their 4 overs on just 6 runs....an excellent start for Stumpies.
The next Hemel batting pair started very strongly, but were soon pegged back by some more fine bowling and fielding. Alex took four wickets in one over. Lucy was still proving her worth with some excellent commitment to the cause behind the stumps. This pair only managed to add a net gain of 17 runs for their 4 overs. The final pair had some bright moments but again Stumpies proved too strong, although they still managed to add 23 runs off 3 overs.
Stumpies won by 65 runs with Hemel B posting a total of 146 off 11 overs for the loss of 14 wickets. Stumpies wickets were nicely spread, with Alex taking 6, Sue taking 3, Laura taking 3, and Piya taking 2. Run outs were achieved by all, and Sue got a catch (Cath ‘avoided’ her catch but quickly recovered to ran out the player).
Yet again team spirit, and an excellent all round team performance won the day. Stumpies will need to be just as sharp against Letchworth in next week’s cup semi-final.
