Radlett CC Stumpies v Letchworth on Sun 17 Oct 2010 at 10.00
Radlett CC Lost 16 runs
Match report
The second game of the season for Stumpies saw them take on Letchworth. Stumpies won the toss and elected to bat.
The opening partnership of Cath McNeill and Piya Haria battled against the full force of arguably the best bowling line-up in the indoor league, and put on a 4-over total of 31 runs for the loss of 2 wickets. The next pair of Alex Hampton and Katie Beverstock (nee Coppiters) took on the bowling attack for a feisty 37 runs for the loss of 2 wickets. Early in their innings, Katie was hit on the head by a no-ball, but steadied herself to partner well with Alex. The final pair of Laura Gurney and Lucy Wilson had a tough time in the final 3 overs, with Stumpies posting an 11 over total of 164 runs for the loss of 8 wickets.
Still, Stumpies went into their fielding with a positive outlook that letchworth were going to have to work really hard to win the match, and that there was still hope that we could win. Letchworth’s opening pair scored steadily despite some lovely bowling by Alex Hampton and Piya Haria. Katie opened her account with a wicket on the first ball (this is what a 2 year break does for you.....’fresh as a daisy’).
The second pair entered the fray with 44 runs on the board. They clearly had a plan to protect their weakest player, so one player blocked at the walls but did not run. Still, Lucy Wilson, with he third ball notched her first wicket of the season. They posted just 23 runs off 4 overs, Stumpies were in with a chance.
The final pair needed to hold onto to their runs to win. Piya and Katie bowled the final 3 overs, with Letchworth taking just 4 runs off Piya’s final 2 overs, and Piya taking a valuable wicket. Depsite Stumpies holding faith until the final over Letchworth won by 16 runs.
Captain, Cath McNeill was very proud of the team’s spirit and for not giving up at any stage. Alex top performed with the bat, Laura only had 8 byes as wicket-keeper, Piya shone with the ball, Katie displayed a good all-round game, and Alex displayed some fine fielding.
