letchworth v Radlett CC U9A on Sat 03 Sep 2005 at 4pm
Radlett CC Won 50 runs
Match report
Radlett's second innings got off to a blistering start. Where before there had been uncertainty, nerves and shocking running, we now had mighty hitting and confident pinching of singles. Udeepa launched the first Radlett 6 of the campaign and followed it next ball with a mighty 4. He hit 15 and he and Fergus added 22 unbeaten runs.It was a brave display of batting from these two who really showed they were made of stern stuff to bounce back after a difficult first innings.
Already we were in sight of Letchworth's first innings 242 with 12 overs to go.Joe and Simeon looked comfortable but just as chickens were being lined up to be counted Joe, having hit a lovely 12, smashed a long hop at square leg who faced with a career as a soprano understandably clung on to an unlikely catch. 2 balls later he was narrowly run out which got the jitters going again. However, that was the last wicket to fall. Relying on some wild and woolly bowling to provide extras the next 2 pairs ground a score of 277 without taking any risks. Admirably cool headed batting by the whole team set Letchworth 298 to win-a big ask against a strong Radlett attack.
Knowing that Letchworth's big hitters came lower down the order, Simeon was asked to open with some flighted spin. What he provided was an atrocious full toss down the leg side first ball which the opening bat gave the kitchen sink. As all eyes darted to the distant boundary, trying to track the trajectory of the ball , which even on this scorching day would surely have snow on it, we were distracted by a loud appeal. Miraculously Will standing up had snaffled the ball. Maybe it was going to be our day after all......
In the very next over the same opener was stumped off Dylan by Will. Understandbly Letchworth were deflated and their cause wasn't helped by a run out in the seventh over.Mind you Radlett had suffered an attack of the Pietersens shelling 3 dollies. At the half way stage Letchworth had 209-3. Surely they were out of it?
At this stage their big number 6 came in. He apparently felt that George had treated him unfairly which was a big surprise to me as the prents were convinced he had more than shown his impartiality on a number of occasions. He may also have been unhappy that a full bunger from Joe had deflected into his face in the first innings. Fired up by an overwhelming sense of injustice he laid about the bowling brilliantly smashing 2 successive 4s through fine leg-this off Jaimin who had kept all the batsmen on a tight rein. In the next over he got a faint nick to Will and Harry took a brilliant tumbling catch. When the number 5 got a single, number 6 took strike again with revenge his mission. As Will steamed in he danced imperiously down the track to meet him. As he and Will nearly collided mid pitch the ball shot on straight for middle and off , rocking the spring back stumps back and dislodging the bails. 210-5. When the poor lad was run out in the next over he retired to a dark corner of the field and smashed his bat against the neighbouring trees.
Letchworth had fought valiently but their confidence had gone. A further run out was followed by a brilliant catch in the deep by Joe off Will in the last over. In total Letchworth had lost 9 wickets and aggregating the scores Radlett won by 70 runs. If that sounds a big margin, it is. But the game was closer than that. The difference was that Radlett learned from their mistakes as the game progressed.Ultimately, the boys bowling was too strong for the opposition which has been the story of the season.
Letchworth very generously invited us back to their club house where their President presented the medals and the trophy. We were also treated to a barbeque, which epitomised the excellent spirit in which the game was played.
From there we returned to the club house. I must thank Tony Fielden, TJ and Dave Holden for arranging and making an additional presentation to the boys. They were delighted with the fantastic reception they received. Roll on next season!
