Radlett CC 5th XI v Pirton on Sat 18 Sep 2010 at 1.15 p.m.
Match was Drawn

Match report Radlett fifths ended their season with an enjoyable club match on the top pitch at Cobden Hill on Saturday, fighting out an honourable draw against Pirton, future rivals in Division 10 in 2011.
Afterwards some of the Radlett side team did a weird and amazing thing -- they bought their opponents a drink and even conversed with them. This activity was thought to have died out about 20 years ago, but the revival of old customs seemed enjoyable enough for Pirton to agree to return to play next year.
Pirton offered to host a warm-up fixture against newly promoted Radlett next year, though playing each other three times in a season might be a bridge too far. Nevertheless it would be worth considering.
The day proved an outstanding success in the sunshine, thanks to two excellent umpires in Peter Hinstridge and Richard Laskowski, the Pirton official. The pacy strip prepared by Nick Searle, the scoring of Bill Marshall -- alone in the box because his opposite number liked to smoke cigars -- and the sumptuous tea prepared by Rebecca Millard and Jill Paice completed a great afternoon out. Charlie Randall's Rock-Ola Max 2 jukebox rounded off a pleasant evening.
Under league rules, 47-43 overs, Pirton declared halfway on 233 for five and Radlett had reached 208 for nine when the game was called off due to bad light... pitch blackness, to be more exact in a day-night game without floodlights.
Ben Lewis hit an excellent 82 off 99 balls in Radlett's total, and Robbie Millard maintained the chase with 48 not out, giving his side an outside chance of sneaking home on such a sound pitch. The only blot during Millard's innings was saying to Lee Greenland "let's run off every ball" as the asking rate rose to seven an over and then calling "no" the first time the new policy could be tried out, stranding his hapless partner by roughly 15 yards.
Radlett lost two early wickets when Tom Clare smashed a full toss to cover and Harry Copley was bowled, but Lewis and Johnny Armitage steadied the ship. Pete Wharton, promoted to No 5, looked like a batsman for a while until he pulled a short ball for a catch to midwicket. Unfortunately wickets kept falling and the target began to look distant.
Radlett's bowling, apart from a fiery opening spell by Luke Paice, useful overs from Wharton and some tidy spin from Randall, was very disappointing, though a classy 70 off 60 balls by Jake Howard had much to do with that impression. One straight six off Copley must have landed close to the square on the second ground. Even allowing for Howard's hard hitting, 10 runs in no-balls, 11 in wides and too many long hops and full tosses gifted the initiative to Pirton. It was just as well Shabbir Foyez was in safe form as wicketkeeper; otherwise many more extras would have been conceded.
Still, a good afternoon of cricket. And to think that this magnificent ground would have remained empty without the game...
