Welwyn Garden City v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sun 01 Sep 2002 at 12:00
Radlett CC Won 2 wickets
Match report
Radlett completed a marvellous weekend by lifting the Becker Transport Cup at a packed Shenley Cricket Centre. There narrow two wicket victory over a plucky Welwyn Garden City saw the Cobden Hill side collect their first trophy in five years since David Hanson’s sides’ memorable double winning season.
On a blazing hot September’s day it was unsurprising that after winning the toss Welwyn’s captain Tony Skeggs elected to bat first. His opening batsman seemed to revel in the role of underdogs by carting the first 3 overs for 22 runs, however ex test skipper David Houghton drew on all his years of experience by immediately replacing the expensive Kervin Marc with his own brand of off spin. The change in pace so early in the innings combined to repress the previously aggressive Page, with Stuart Browne also applying the much-needed brakes, it was no surprise that the hitherto prolific Page was frustrated into playing a ball outside off stump to give a sharp chance to wicket keeper Trevor Woolfe. Browne completed his ten overs for a typically economical 19 runs and with Houghton also conceding only 21 runs from his allotted overs Welwyn had been restricted to 91 for 1 at the halfway stage.
Following the drinks break Simon Jackson was introduced into the attack, Jackson delivered his best bowling performance of the season and was a consistent thorn in Welwyn’s side, his first 6 overs went for a miserly 5 runs, he also bagged the crucial wicket of skipper Skeggs. With Houghton claiming the wicket of Tamblyn for 25 and two run outs, one a direct hit from Graham Dill to remove the stubborn resistance of Cranston for 52, Radlett were firmly in the driving seat. However Welwyn fought back well in the final 5 overs as the benefit of wickets in hand enabled Wrodarczyk to hit a whirlwind 35 runs from just 19 balls to lift them to a position of 192 for 6 from their 50 overs.
Radlett’s response got off to a similar start as Welwyn’s with Nick Fielden crashing a huge six in the third over, however his brief innings came to a close when he was caught & bowled in the following over by the impressive Tucker. This wicket brought Matt Evans to the crease, fresh from his first century of the season the previous day he soon picked up where he left off with a series of pulsating back foot drives. He and Nick Hampton pushed the score on to 34 before the latter was adjudged to be leg before wicket to Tucker. Dill joined Evans but again after a building a solid base Welwyn replied with the important wicket of Evans for 24.
For the following two hours the Radlett supporters, who together with their Welwyn counterparts ensured that a festival atmosphere & cacophony of sound was maintained throughout the day, were taken on a roller coaster of emotions. The Radlett batsman toyed with the supporters heartstrings, as each time it looked victory was within their grasp Welwyn would fight back to claim a wicket. Dill (24) Jon Freedman (31) and Jim Chaudry (29) all looked set to win the game only to fall to a clever piece of bowling or an injudicious shot. Indeed at 140-6 and with Houghton & Kervin Marc, the only remaining recognised batsman at the crease, Welwyn may well have been considered favourites, but having crucially missed a chance to run Marc out the tall West Indian promptly hit 20 from a Wrodarczyk over. It was harsh on Wrodarczyk who with his earlier quick runs and 4 wickets was later named man of the match.
Still Radlett could not close the game out as both Marc & then Jackson were victims of terrific catches. In the end it was quite appropriate that Houghton, who has masterminded the transformation at Radlett this season following last years disappointments, would hit the winning runs with a lofted off drive much to the relief of the entire Radlett Cricket Club.
