Hoddesdon v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sun 10 Jul 2005 at 1:00
Radlett CC Won 69 runs
Match report
Hot weather was going to make the toss important and when Shane Burger called correctly he had no hesitation in deciding to bat.
And off the Radlett openers went, a highlights package with no need for editing. Fours, sixes, wickets or dropped catches seemed to be the only option as some indifferent bowling was carved to all corners. Burger, 79 and Rob Smith, 53 at three and four were brutal and after 15 overs the score was 125-2. The loss of their wickets slowed Radlett down, yet Brendan Hutchings 40, Graham Dill 66 not out and James Lewis 31 not out ensured that the start was not wasted with patient play, then strong hitting into the road. 335–5 was a competitive total on a small ground.
In reply another highlights package was being broadcast with every over seeming to contain a six into the trees. Wickets followed yet unlikely victory for the chasing team was only 8 an over away. It was Brendan Hutchings fielding that turned the game with two run outs and a dynamic display of all round fielding excellence. This was backed up by some good catching. Graham Dill contributed with a run out of his own after suddenly discovering that his right arm did work leaving the batsmen half way down the wicket after inadvisably listening to his Hertfordshire partners call of “no arm, no arm,” as he turned for two.
Oliver Robertson was to step up at a key time and his tight bowling and competitive spirit made victory sure for the team; three wickets his reward for an excellent spell. David Hegarty had earlier taken out the highlights tape for his spell of bowling and replaced it with something much more sensible. Another good spell from David who has been excellent this year.
Victory came through a Robertson slower ball, and a good weekend’s cricket was over. Hoddesdon had batted very well and had played very positively with good home crowd support.
Skipper Burger had done a fantastic job in energising his troops on a hot day and was backed up in the field by his team, with Hutchings and Jon Smithers outstanding, this ensured that Radlett are in the quarter finals in two weeks time.
