Shepherds Bush v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sun 19 Jun 2005 at 1:00
Radlett CC Won 12 runs

Match report Radlett travelled to 'the bush' with high hopes of keeping up their quest to return to the Oval in September. All appeared to be going well when skipper Hayden Smith won the toss on a blisteringly hot day and elected to bat.

At 90-7, the heat, both metaphorical and literal, was on the Radlett's no 7 and 9.

Lucky then that Nick Hampton and Ian 'Oz' Edwards, are not characters who require suncream. In a sure-footed, calm and deliberate way, they slowly but surely dug Radlett out of a truly enormous hole. Mixing defence with sensible boundary hitting, and also fine running between the wickets, the score mounted. What would be a good score on this wicket, that so many top order batsmen had perished on? 150? That was long way off.

Yet the partnership grew, and steady and composed batting saw the pair past 150 , past 175, past 200 and to the final total of 219. An effort of willpower from both. An outstanding partnership, enjoyed by the batsmen and their fellow players.

In reply Shepherds Bush got off to a good start. Clean hitting took them along at a brisk rate. Again Edwards was the difference, he bowled his overs superbly, took key wickets and found the intensity to ensure Radlett would not be beaten. David Hegarty and Simon Jackson bowled tidily to push the run rate above sixes; and it was great to see 'Jacko' back and bowling well. Smith returned to secure the game and his first three overs settled matters as they ' could not lay a bat on it', leaving Radlett a mere ten runs ahead at the end.

We must thank all the supporters who travelled to watch and cheer. And also James Lewis, Dave Holden and Tony Fielden who provided great support with much needed drinks at every available opportunity. James Lewis on the back off his marvellous 150 the previous day showed what a team man he is to travel, support, and then field at a vital time after an injury. With the final margin so slight that indeed could have been crucial, and maybe won us the game.

This game itself was superb. From adversity Radlett emerged victorious, showing some of the virtues cricket has over any game, the chance for individuals to do remarkable things for their team. Nick Hampton was outstanding, and is finding the form that made him Radlett’s premier batsmen two years ago. But it was Edwards, who is the consummate team player, who enjoyed a very special day. He will not want to be singled out but it was a pleasure, and always is, to play with someone so passionate about the team. Well played Oz, top effort.
