Radlett CC 1st XI v North Mymms on Sun 11 Aug 2002 at 12:30
Radlett CC Won 36 Runs
Match report
Radlett reached their first Becker Transport Cup Final for 5 years with a closely fought victory against near neighbours North Mymms. However the Cobden Hill side will have to wait a further 7 days before finding out the identity of their opponents at Shenley on September 1st as the other semi final between West Herts & Welwyn Garden City was a casualty of the torrential rain hitting the area on Friday evening.
Batting first on a slow track was always going to be difficult but Matt Evans decision to do so was vindicated by the fact that the last 20 overs of the game were played in deteriorating light. Indeed Evans led by example, as his carefully constructed innings of 77 was the catalyst for the home teams score. Evans & Kaf Jahangir combined conservative shots and aggressive running well for an excellent first wicket stand of 78. Although Jahangir (25) was to be bowled by the pacy David Searle, Jim Chaudry joined Evans at the crease to continue the slow process of run making.
Having scored at a rate of more than 6 an over in previous rounds of the competition it was somewhat surprising to see Radlett struggle at less than 4 an over. This, in the main, was to do with the tight bowling of Mather, Searle, Saxby & Lawless. The pressure that the visiting bowlers applied began to tell on the Radlett batsman as careless shots saw the home side wobble to 146 for 5 with only 9 overs in the innings remaining
These final overs of the innings were a crucial period of the match and a phase which saw the momentum swing in Radlett’s favour as Kervin Marc, Simon Jackson & Ian ‘Oz’ Edwards all hit brisk scores of 20 at a rate of 2 a ball. This surge at the end of the innings enabled Radlett to post a demanding 219 runs.
In reply Mymms got off to a wonderful start with Andy Lewis and Simon Clements showing their class. When Lewis, the former Herts star, was deceived by Jackson with a well disguised slower ball for 30, the visitors had regained the initiative lost earlier. Even when Clements departed to a catch by Edwards of the bowling of Chaudry Mymms required just 114 runs from 23 overs at less than 5 an over. However a fiery 5 over spell by Marc saw the experienced Gary Black & Mark Saxby dismissed and with an increasing run rate the writing was on the wall for the men from Home Farm. Mymms gamely battled on but when 3 wickets were lost in the 45th over bowled by Stuart Browne they had to accept defeat. When Searle was last out Mymms were still 37 runs short of their target.
