Radlett CC U10 v Watford Town on Sun 27 Jun 2010 at 9.30
Radlett CC Won By 37 Runs

Match report A glorious sunny morning at Radlett saw the return fixture against an improving Watford side. Radlett won the toss and decided to field, with Max Sahota skippering for the first time this year.

Once again, Radlett bowled and fielded with a maturity far beyond their years. Bowling lines were impeccable, the pacers kept the Watford batsman in check, and the fielding was attacking. I might be slightly biased, but I think we must be one of the best fielding outfits in the league!

Watford managed to get to 210 for 0 at the end of the 4th over. The next set of batsmen were then exposed to some of the best leg spin bowling I have seen for a while. Armando and Rahil bowled impeccably, with subtle changes in flight, and considerable spin. Armando took an excellent hat trick, ably assisted in the field by James McCullum, our new gully specialist! Rahil followed up his partner's hat trick with a wicket maiden, to leave Watford trailing on 194 for 5.

The following four overs were slow going for Watford, with the score moving on to 195 for 5. Piers, Max and James unleashed a hostile spell of bowling, which kept the scoring in check, and Armando grabbed another wicket to add to his impressive tally.

The final pair seemed to cope a bit better with the bowling, and managed to hit a few fours to give the score an element of respectability. The final score was 211 for 6 after 16 overs.

Radlett came into bat with simple instructions: go out and enjoy yourselves! The first pair of Max and James had to cope with Watford's finest, and although they lost a few wickets, they did manage to score a few as well. The score after the first four overs was 207 for 3.

Our next pair of Piers and Harry batted well for most of the innings (save for a last ball hoick to a straight one from Piers which he has promised he will never attempt again!). Once again, the boys struggled to get bat on ball, attempting airy drives rather than solid, getting-into-line punches. It is hard to get going from the first ball, but the sooner the boys realise that their footwork is as important as the bat in their hand the more likely that they will be able to improve their scoring rate. In fairness to Watford, their bowlers were much improved from our previous outing; however I think our boys are talented batsmen and should be scoring far more freely in match situations.

The match was tentatively poised at the halfway mark at 213 for 3. Our third pair of Armando and Rahil managed to keep their wickets and take the score to 242 for 3. Again, the batting was sensible, but I do think we need to lose the fear of the hardball and attack the bowling more regularly. Armando batted well to top score with 13, including two of his favourite cover drives for 4!

The last pair of Marcus and Adam batted sensibly, but again, far too many hittable balls were missed as a result of indecisive footwork. Adam employed a very straight bat to score 10 runs, however a few unnecessary run outs reduced the score to 248-5 at the end of the innings.

A good win for Radlett, but one reached by our bowling in the main. Our batters need to step up and try and win us a game on our batting merit, and is possible if the boys could trust their natural attacking instinct.

Special mention to our man of the match, Armando, for his hat trick and for his top score of 13. Also a special mention to Piers and Max, who bowled at a fiery pace in the stifling heat, and Rahil & Armando who are bowling excellently in combination.

Max should also get a mention for an outstanding display as skipper. He read the game very well, set great attacking fields when Rahil and Armando were on song, and cleverly mixed up the bowling to keep Watford guessing!

Thanks once again to all the parents supporting, including our newly qualified scorer!
