Berkhamsted v Radlett CC U10 on Sun 23 May 2010 at 9.30
Radlett CC Lost By 1 Run

Match report Another early start on a glorious Sunday morning. Radlett U10's were away to Berkhamsted. James McCallum, Radlett captain, lost the toss and was asked to bat first.

The first pair of James McCallum and Max Sahota batted well to take the score to 223-1. The Berkhamsted bowlers were accurate and the fielding was particularly quick. I thought the opening pair did exceptionally well in the circumstances to add 23 runs for the loss of 1 wicket.

Unfortunately, our second pair of Adam Kohler and Zac Wolpe didn't manage to accelerate the scoring, which put Radlett on the back foot. Berkhamsted's bowling was very good, however I hope the boys learn to wait for the ball, and watch it onto the bat. Adam and Zac are normally great timers of the ball, and if they get hold of the ball it almost always finds the boundary! A few unnecessary wickets were also lost, leaving the score on 223-3.

Our third pair, Rahil and Harry batted sensibly, but again were guilty of not watching the ball onto the bat. Our boys are normally adept at nurdling runs, but I think I lost count of the number of plays and misses I saw! Harry was unfortunately bowled towards the end of the innings, which left Radlett on 232-4 after 12 overs.

Our final pair, Piers Dorward and George Leigh, were tasked with looking for quick runs, by rotating the strike and punishing the bad balls. Once again, there were too many plays and misses and far too many wild slogs at balls that merited more respect than they were given. A few wickets and run outs resulting from some outstanding fielding from Berkhamsted led to a final score of 231-7 after the allotted 16 overs.

Our bowling was once again excellent, only to be slightly let down by a number of missed catches. The boys made excellent attempts to take their catches, but I believe a lack of practice with the hardball is probably a major factor.

Our bowling efforts managed to curtail the Berkhamsted score to 204-4 after 8 overs. A very special mention should go to Zac Wolpe, who took 2 wickets in an over and the opening pair of James and Piers who applied a great deal of pressure on the Berkhamsted batsmen.

Berkhamsted's next pair of Charlie Mann and Tobias Monday batted very well to add 18 runs. The fact that they rotated the strike well and managed to accumulate runs with minimum risk was encouraging to watch, and I hope the boys took note of how sensible accumulation is preferable to the "slog every ball" approach! The score edged up to 222-4, and a victory for the home side seemed inevitable........

.....But cricket is a strange game! A moment of brilliance came in the 13th over, when George took 2 wickets in two balls, although the credit should be shared with Zac who took two excellent catches to complete the dismissals. That left Berkhamsted with 10 to get with 2 overs left. Enter Piers Dorward, who bowled with a sense of real purpose and at a speed which I am not sure many under 10's have faced before. A few fiery balls were kept out by the circumspect Berkhamsted batsman, until the last ball of the over, a real effort ball that unfortunately ended up as a no ball of shoulder height, which was tipped round the corner for 4.

That left Berkhamsted needing 2 of the last over, which was bravely bowled by James. Two quick singles were taken early in the over, and with victory sealed, the batsmen were happy to keep out the remaining balls. With the last ball of the match, James delivered a great ball that hurried the batsman, resulting with a lobbed shot in the air, which landed in no-mans land half way up the pitch!!

In the end, a great game of cricket played in excellent spirit, with both sides going head to head throughout the match. The boys really tried hard in the field, and I hope we can step up the standard of our batting to match our brilliant bowling skills.
