Radlett CC 3rd XI v Cheshunt on Sat 27 Jul 2002 at
Radlett CC Lost 4 wickets
Match report
Radlett were beaten by the best team they have faced this season on Saturday, although they had their chances to win and played well in a very good game of cricket.
On the best playing surface the Cobden Hill side had seen this year, Cheshunt won the toss and, after some deliberation, put Radlett in to bat.
The Cheshunt opening bowlers were fast and straight, and after a promising start Saunders perished. Ingram looked calm, and made 44 before falling to an agricultural hack.
Simon Gray (Man of the Match) played with increasing confidence after a stodgy start, and while he was going well with Smithers, collecting runs at his usual brisk rate, Radlett looked like getting to a declarable position.
But, crucially, Gray (59) and Smithers (42) got out just when they were looking strong. Haxell played pleasantly for an unbeaten 27, leaving Radlett on 218 for 6, after their 53 overs.
This constituted a good bowling performance from Cheshunt, who stuck to their task well. Radlett were probably 20 runs short of what Haxell would have wanted.
Cheshunt have failed in promising circumstances this season, but on this occasion they did not. Radlett managed only two maiden overs, and Cheshunt prevailed with three overs to spare.
Gooch made an unbeaten 108, but it was Stephenson who caught the eye. He has the timing of a batsman in a far higher league. It took the ball of the match, from Gitay, to remove him.
The Radlett bowlers performed with a determined attitude, and there were few bad overs. But the Cheshunt batsmen always had the target in their sights and ended up winning by four wickets.
There were two successful debuts in the Radlett side. Craig Riley is a brilliant fielder and he bowled effectively. Mark Gray, a 14-year-old leg spinner, bowled with maturity and has an excellent wrong 'un.
Radlett came out of Saturday's game with 16 points and they just managed to retain their fourth position in the league.
The race for promotion is extremely interesting, and Radlett still have every chance of being there at the end of the season.
