Finchampstead v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sat 24 Aug 2002 at
Match was Drawn

Match report Radlett secured premier league cricket at Cobden Hill next season with a much improved performance at Finchampstead’s scenic Memorial Park ground. With it they condemned Finch, the current league champions to the ignominy of relegation. Without their talismanic Victorian all rounder Jon Moss, Finch have been a poor imitation of the all conquering side of last year.

Having won the toss the home captain Stuart Seymour elected to field first, it was to be an error of judgement that Finch would never recover from. Although Seymour could not be blamed as if Radlett batted like they had down in their previous two performances the game may have been over by lunch.

However the Radlett openers Nick Fielden & Matt Evans played with a confidence and due diligence that has not been present in recent weeks. Their solid platform gave rise to an excellent all round batting display that mixed care with brutal aggression. 33 overs were bowled prior to lunch and it wasn’t until the final ball that Finch were successful in attaining a wicket. Matt Evans patient innings was brought to a close on 49 when he was stumped. He and Fielden had shared a century stand for the first time this season and it was pity that Evans did not reach a thoroughly deserved half century.

After lunch James Lewis joined Fielden at the crease. The pair shared a 33 run stand before Lewis was bizarrely removed. Leaving a ball to leg spinner McInnes the young left hander somehow contrived to hit his own wicket. This brought Jim Chaudry to the wicket, he constructed a well made 26 before lobbing a catch to Spencer at Mid Wicket.

In the comfortable position of 189-3 skipper Houghton unleashed big hitting Kervin Marc on the weary bowling attack. He smashed the ball to all parts of the ground in a whirlwind innings of 58, his best league score of the season. The innings of Marc effectively ended any chance of Finch winning the game.

Radlett declared on 270 for 7, 4 balls before the end of their allotted 66 overs. While Marc’s innings was vicious it was overshadowed by Fielden’s who fully deserved his man of the match award for a typically stylish 88. Fielden who has been missing during Radlett’s poor batting spell looked to be back to his best and would undoubtedly have gone on to a make a century had he been at full fitness

In an attempt to lure Finch into some early false shots, Radlett opened the bowling with the old ball and off spinner Robbie Crocker and medium pacer Stuart Browne. Browne was to pick up the wicket of Brogan for 5 but it wasn’t until the new ball was taken and Simon Jackson introduced that Radlett made any serious inroads into the home sides batting. Again it was Browne who did the damage managing to collect 4 wickets to take his league season haul to 38. However Finchampstead decided to settle for a draw, and with it relegation, as they battled to the end. David Houghton picked up the 3 other wickets but it was not enough to bowl the home team out. Finchampstead closed their innings on 226 for 7.

This weekend sees Radlett participate in the final of the Becker Transport Cup at Shenley against Welwyn Garden City. The final gives Radlett their first chance of silverware in 5 years and also the possibility of placing the Becker Cup alongside the old Furnell Cup in the Cobden Hill sides trophy cabinet. The match starts at 12:00.
