Radlett CC 1st XI v Banbury on Sat 03 Aug 2002 at
Match was Drawn
Match report
Radlett were subjected to a masterly batting display by South African Craig Haupt as any chance of leapfrogging their visitors from Oxfordshire into 5 place disappeared with the Banbury captains mammoth innings of 177.
Having won the toss, skipper David Houghton elected to insert the visitors believing that the torrential rain during the week before would make batting uncomfortable. His theory initially proved correct as Sabin was caught at slip by Oz Edwards of the bowling of Marc however there was precious little other success during the following couple of hours as the wicket brought Haupt to the crease and he signalled his intent with some early lust blows.
The pace at which the runs came was a concern to Houghton who mixed his inexperienced bowling attack cleverly. Each bowler came in for a dose of punishment from Haupt but all kept fighting and would not give up in the face of a barrage of attacking shots. The pick of the bowlers was again Kervin Marc, bowling 23 overs he picked up 5 wickets for a 100 runs.
Many of Banbury’s problems this season have stemmed from when Haupt does not score runs and although Banbury declared with nine wickets down this inadequacy was again highlighted as the remainder of the team contributed only 87 runs. Indeed with the loss of their captain came an extraordinary passage of play where only a further 12 runs were added in as many overs. This period of the game effectively ended Radlett’s interest in winning the game and also ensured that unless the home team batted poorly the game would end in a draw.
Requiring to score at nearly 5 an over for the entirety of the 58 over innings, Radlett were in need of an explosive start, this they partially did with Matt Evans scoring 30 and Nick Hampton a quick fire 22. However in a period of 10 minutes either side of tea 18 runs were added for the loss of 3 wickets, which meant that Radlett were forced to accept a draw. In the remaining overs James Lewis again batted with composure to hit a solid 22. Houghton remained unbeaten on 46 as the Cobden Hill side closed their innings on 174 for 5.
The dour draw meant that Banbury received 12 points and Radlett 9, keeping the Hertfordshire side in 7th place.
