Preston v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 13 Jul 2002 at 1:30
Radlett CC Won 4 wickets
Match report
On a hot sunny day Radlett bowled quite superbly, to set up a victory against the mid-table Preston second team.
Radlett enjoyed the day in beautiful surroundings, with pleasant weather and friendly natives involved in a serious but enjoyable game of cricket and they won.
Preston is a small village near Hitchin, where the villagers saved the local pub from extinction and have an idyllic cricket ground with excellent amenities.
After a couple of disappointing results, Haxell kept his nerve and won the toss. He was rewarded with what was comfortably Radlett's best bowling performance of the season.
Chris Brown continued to improve, and bowled beautifully in his 15-over spell to win man-of-the-match for the second consecutive week.
Haxell himself bowled ten excellent overs, until a forklift truck was organised to move him into his fielding position. The spinners Sudbery and Robert Crocker bowled with guile and control to take three wickets apiece, and, backed up by another stunning fielding display, Preston stuttered from wicket to wicket to total just 98 in 48.4 overs.
If Jez Menzies wonders why he keeps being hauled up to higher teams, it is because his fielding was on another plateau. He stopped everything that went near him, and a lot that went nowhere near him.
The rest of the fielders followed his lead, and to have McEwan keeping wicket beautifully kept the Preston batsmen pegged into their crease and defence-minded.
With 99 to win in lots of overs, Radlett lost two early wickets, following some excellent new ball bowling, particularly from the youthful Green.
But with Ingram joined by Smithers the flow of runs was smooth, and victory was inevitable.
This progress was rudely interrupted by a questionable LBW decision by the temporary umpire against Ingram.
This precipitated the fall of another four wickets, showing a slightly worrying brittleness in the Radlett middle order.
The solid Smithers again saw the side through to a four-wicket victory, with good support from John Crocker, who made another glorious nought not out.
It was a wonderfully enjoyable game, and Radlett showed they had excellent spirit and morale.
