Brimsdown v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 06 Jul 2002 at 1:30
Radlett CC Lost 7 wickets
Match report
This was comfortably Radlett Thirds’ worst performance of the season. Some fragile batting was followed by some buffet bowling as we handed the very friendly Brimsdown side an easy win.
This was our first visit to Brimsdown, and it is easy to see why. To give you a flavour of the place, we were informed that the brand new sight screens were necessary because vandals had set fire to the previous ones. We changed in a Portadustbin, which had also been vandalised, and the locks broken. Consequently, we had to wait twenty minutes while we waited for a new key to be obtained before we could avail ourselves of these palatial facilities.
The whole match was punctuated by young children in full £120 football kit shouting “Put it on me ‘ead”, and “Send me on a mission” and such like. There was also a young lad of indeterminate IQ who insisted on blowing a whistle non-stop. After a couple of hours of this torture he was informed that in the event of his not ceasing this awful row, the only way the whistle could make a noise was if he broke wind.
Despite this, the Brimsdown team are a delightful bunch of people, and I look forward to entertaining them at Cobden Hill. In that event we would hope to prduce a side that has not been decimated by six drop outs from higher sides. Compare this level of commitment with our captain Richard Haxell, who, with his wife and two young children were moving house the same day. Haxell made it, what excuse have the other six got?
We lost the toss, batted poorly and bowled worse. Brimsdown won deservedly by seven wickets, and the middle bit is really too painful to recount. We allowed 36 extras, and bowled without penetration with the exception of Chis Brown (Man of the Match)who was perhaps underused.
Good bits were the batting of Haxell who can always change the course of a game. Chris Brown made the same number of runs in a quite different way, but none the less importantly, and Matt Barrett showed that he has talent and guts. The Colt Ashley Tillet made his debut, drove the last ball of the innings imperiously for a four through cover, fielded faultlessly, and had a baptism of fire in his bowling. He will learn much from this experience, and will be an asset in future years to higher teams than the Thirds.
There was little else positive to take from this game, but I suppose whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
