Reading v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sat 27 Jul 2002 at 11:30
Match was Drawn

Match report An outstanding rearguard action from youngsters James Lewis & Rob Crocker ensured that Radlett held on to a draw against an in form Reading side.

Having won the toss Reading skipper Sam Patel had no hesitation in electing to bat on a hot day and a pitch that looked made for runs. This decision proved correct as the only success Radlett had in the first session before lunch was the run out of Bjorn Mordt. In fact the sometimes suicidal running of Perkins, the opening bat, often looked like Radlett’s most likely source of a wicket.

The visitors opening bowlers, Kervin Marc & Stuart Browne toiled away without success and both found it difficult to tie the home side down, when Marc was replaced by Matt Evans he to found the wicket unsympathetic. Perkins went on to make a fine 113, he was ably supported by the redoubtable Tom Fray who scored an effortless 80.

Following the luncheon interval spinners Dave Houghton & Rob Crocker took up the mantle of bowling, it was Houghton who eventually broke the partnership but only after a magnificent catch by Oz Edwards. Edwards dived high to his right to pluck the ball one handed out of mid air much to the considerable surprise of batsman Fray. With Fray gone and quick runs required the Reading batsman took more risks, this played into Radlett’s hands as wickets began to tumble with regularity. In fact from a position of 183 – 1, Reading eventually finished on 272 for 7. Houghton was the pick of the bowlers and finished with figures of 4 for 69.

Radlett’s reply got off to an unfortunate start as after a solid opening stand, Hampton drove the ball back towards the bowler, only for Patel to touch the ball onto the stumps, Evans who was out of his ground was therefore run out in the most cruel of circumstances. From that point Radlett could not get back into a winning position, indeed at 89 for 6 with more than 30 overs remaining and their senior batsman departed it looked very much like the Cobden Hill side would be heading for their second successive defeat. However Lewis & Crocker batted with experience well beyond their years, often having to contend with some intimidating bowling the two played with considerable courage. When Crocker departed for valiant 44 only 5 overs remained, these overs were successfully negotiated and Lewis left the field unbeaten with a well deserved half century

The 8 points gleamed from the draw was not sufficient to elevate the side any higher than the 7th position that they occupied on the morning of the match. This week Banbury visit the Miles Brunton memorial ground in what should be an intriguing clash.
