Henley v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sat 20 Jul 2002 at 11:30
Radlett CC Lost 2 Wickets

Match report Radlett's fine run of form came to an abrupt end at the weekend following a two-wicket defeat at second placed Henley.

Invited to bat on a dry wicket which was likely to turn, the Cobden Hill outfit were immediately in trouble as Matt Evans was caught behind the wicket for only four runs.

He was soon followed by the in-form Nick Fielden.

Fielden, out for 18, was the first of five leg before decisions during the match, and the second of an eventual three wickets for White.

White's final victim was Matt Cousens, who was caught at extra cover playing a lofted drive.

At 27-3, Radlett were in danger of being dismissed for under a hundred runs.

That looked like a distinct possibility when left arm spinner Hands removed Jim Chaudry and captain Dave Houghton in the space of four balls.

Hands would go on to bowl 19 economical overs and collect six wickets, as he made full use of a pitch that suited his style of bowling.

At the lunch interval Radlett had crept to 85 for the loss of seven wickets.

In part this was due to a watchful innings by Jon Freedman. Freedman mixed defence and attack cleverly to be the only batsman to look comfortable at the crease.

However apart from a 42 run partnership with Oz Edwards no other team-mate remained long enough to support Freedman. He was eventually last out for 51, run out following a mix up with tail ender Stuart Browne. Radlett's total of 140 always looked 30 runs light of being a competitive score.

The recent good run has instilled the players with confidence, and the most pleasing aspect of the game was the fighting spirit of the players during Henley's innings. This shows how far the side has come in the last 12 months under the tutelage of Houghton.

Two early breakthroughs by Kervin Mark helped their cause and no doubt stirred the butterflies in the home side's dressing room.

More was to come from Radlett as a better understanding between Freedman and Browne than had been shown earlier resulted in a run out, leaving Henley in an uncomfortable position at 38 -3.

Browne then proceeded to use the wicket as cleverly as Hands had previously. His leg breaks induced several false strokes and rash shots on his way to claiming his second five wicket haul of the season.

At 98-7 Radlett were in with an excellent chance of an unlikely victory, however Atkins took the game away from the Cobden Hill side with a well constructed 41 under intense pressure. When he was out, attempting one final big shot to win the game only four runs were required which the Henley number 10 duly made with some ease.

Radlett's haul of nine points sees them fall a couple of places to seventh in the table.
