Radlett CC 1st XI v High Wycombe on Sat 13 Jul 2002 at 11:30
Radlett CC Won 47 runs

Match report Radlett’s recent excellent form continued with a resounding victory over league leaders High Wycombe at Cobden Hill on Saturday. Sunday also saw a comfortable win at Knebworth Park in the Becker Transport Cup making it an amazing 5 wins on the trot. This sequence is even more remarkable as prior to the win over St Albans which began this extraordinary run the Cobden Hill side had won only one other competitive match this season.

Radlett won the toss and chose to bat, a brave decision as in David Taylor High Wycombe have the leagues most prolific wicket taker. However Taylor and Cole were both put to the sword in the early exchanges by the in form duo of Nick Fielden and Matt Evans. The pair cruised to a third consecutive 50 run opening partnership before Evans fell to a miss-timed pull shot. Tony Picket fell shortly after bowled offering no stroke but Radlett recovered well to arrive at 76- 2 at the lunch interval.

The half hour break worked to Wycombes advantage as Woodroffe & Khan combined to take 3 early wickets including Fielden for a patient 42. At 106-5 Radletts innings was in need of rebuilding a job which coach David Houghton & Jon Freedman did with some relish until the later was bowled for a well constructed 20. Freedman’s demise brought Kervin Marc to the crease and his clean hitting of the ball generated fresh impetus to the innings as the home side were able to reach 196-9 from their allotted 66 overs. Marc remaining unbeaten on 34 and Houghton 35

With the loss of Dan Amedee & Ian ‘Oz’ Edwards to injury Radlett had few options other than Marc & Stuart Browne to bowl the majority of their overs. It was Browne bowling with the aide of a slight breeze who did the early damage. He managed to pick up 3 wickets to leave Wycombe precariously positioned at 36-3 at tea.

The outcome of the game was placed firmly on the shoulders of Wycombe’s best batsmen Greg Pooley, Jason Harrison & David Taylor. Skipper Harrison would therefore have been disappointed to have been run out for just 11 following good fielding by Freedman. He would have been even more dismayed with Taylor’s soft dismissal, bowled by Dave Houghton’s slow off breaks

With Pooley at the crease Wycombe were always dangerous, however when he departed for a valiant 86 with it went any hope of the visitors claiming a victory. Indeed with the loss of Pooley Wycombe knew they had a job on their hand to avoid there first defeat of any kind this season. This they couldn’t do as Marc ripped the tail apart to bowl Wycombe out for 149, Marc’s figures of 5-48 were just reward for some lively bowling. He was ably supported by Browne who bowled 23 overs and conceded a miserly 25 runs. The victory moves Radlett up 2 places to fifth in the Home Counties Premier League.
