Radlett CC 1st XI v Bicester on Sat 06 Jul 2002 at 11:30
Radlett CC Won 9 wickets

Match report The early season promise and the subsequent improvement in consistent performance shown by Radlett is now being transferred into victories, as Saturday saw them record their second successive 25 point haul. The triumph saw them ascend one place to seventh in the league table but the Cobden Hill side are now only 32 points from second spot and will be looking to push into the top half of the table during the second half of the season.

After Friday evenings torrential rain it was perhaps unsurprising that the wicket was submerged when play was due to commence at 11:00. Indeed the fortification of the covers was rendered ineffective with half of the wicket remaining dry and the other saturated. With the umpires concurring that it was unplayable, attention turned to a wicket which had been prepared for the previous day but had been uncovered overnight. With both captains and officials eager to play the wicket was deemed acceptable and the start of play pushed back to midday to give it further chance to dry out.

With Radlett believing it to be their day, the first of many strokes of fortune went their way as after winning the toss, skipper Houghton had no hesitation in inserting the men from Oxfordshire. The decision immediately reaped dividends as opening bowlers Kervin Marc & Stuart Browne both claimed early wickets. With the score at 12-2 Browne claimed a second wicket in bizarre circumstances. Chapman the Bicester number 4 smashed the ball in the air only for it to cannon into Matt Evans kneecap and balloon to Jim Chaudry fielding at short leg for what was an unlucky dismissal. Evans, in some discomfort was led from the field and took no further part in the first session.

With Radlett continuing to suffocate the Bicester batsman it was no surprise that Marc, Browne & 19 year old off spinner Dan Amedee undertook all the bowling. Amedee bowled some unplayable deliveries using his height to great effect. Captain Houghton rotated his bowlers well and all 3 players picked up 3 wickets a piece with the remaining wicket a run out following good work from Jon Freedman. Bicester were eventually all out for just 84 runs.

Having successfully chased a comparable scoreline the previous week, Radlett were confident of reaching their target. Without usual opening partner Nick Fielden Matt Evans, batting with the aide of a runner, faced the Bicester bowlers with Nick Hampton. The pair took full advantage of some early wayward bowling to ensure that there would be no jitters in the Radlett camp. Hampton was bowled for 29 runs but Evans (50*) and Matt Cousens (6*) saw the home side to a comfortable victory. Radlett reached the target in just 14 overs largely due to the big hitting of Evans & Hampton

Radlett entertain table toppers High Wycombe this weekend with the possibility of 4 players returning. Nick Fielden, Oz Edwards, Tony Pickett & Graham Dill will all be hopeful of a starting place as Radlett attempt to continue their winning streak. On Sunday Radlett make the short trip to Knebworth Park. The winner of that contest will reach the quarter final of the Becker Transport cup.
