Beaconsfield v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sat 29 Jun 2002 at 11:30
Radlett CC Won 10 wickets

Match report Radlett recorded an emphatic victory over near neighbours Beaconsfield to put 30 points between themselves and the relegation zone. In previous weeks both the batsman and bowlers have performed sporadically, on Saturday the whole team played in unison and the result was astounding.

On a pitch that had yielded over 450 runs the previous week both teams would have wanted to bat first and register a large total to place pressure on the side batting second. This is what the home captain Storie had looked to do after winning the toss, but to say that the flip of the coin was the only thing that went Stories way would have been an understatement.

Storie who was in a rich vein of form having hit consecutive centuries was out first ball of the innings to Kervin Marc. The ball cut back and kept relatively low before striking the pads giving the umpire little choice but to raise the finger and confirm the diamond duck. Drepaul followed shortly after, also a victim of Marc’s pace and when Perks, O Reilly and Aitkins departed in the space of 2 runs, Beaconsfield were reeling at 24-5. Having been in a similar position the previous week only to subsequently let their opponents of the hook, it was important that this time Radlett would be in no such forgiving mood. This was never going to be the case however as Stuart Browne & Marc continued to wreak havoc in the Beaconsfield innings. Browne was fully supported by his fielders as his eventual haul of 5 wickets for a typically miserly 36 runs was in part due to 3 brilliant catches, 2 by Oz Edwards at silly point and one in the slip cordon by Nick Fielden.

At lunch Beaconsfield had reached 95 for the loss of 9 wickets. Mahood the Beaconsfield number 11 could not have enjoyed his lunch too much with the knowledge that Marc, who had been rested for the 45 minutes prior to lunch was going to take up the attack upon resumption. The reality of the tall fast West Indian was even more remarkable as with his very first ball Mahood’s stumps were sent in 3 different directions to complete his figures of 4 for 30.

Having failed with a similar low target chase against Basingstoke earlier in the season the match was not quite over as a contest. However Nick Fielden & Matt Evans took charge of the innings from the outset. The first ball was well defended by Fielden and a quick single ensued, although only one run the positive tone of the innings was set.

As the innings unfolded & the target loomed closer, the shots became more attacking. Both openers began to hit the boundary rope with regularity, Fielden claiming the shot of the day with a mammoth hooked six over deep square leg off the hapless Sarfraz. In the end the first wicket pair needed only 19 overs to score the required runs with Fielden smashing the last ball for 4 to reach his half-century and Evans finishing on 41.

In the final round of matches before the halfway point in the season Radlett entertain Bicester. Bicester were also buoyed by their first victory of the season at the weekend and Radlett know that they will have to perform with equal application to ensure that their good run continues.
