Harrow 2 v Radlett CC Sunday III on Sun 08 Aug 2010 at 1.30
Radlett CC Lost by 4 wickets
Match report
A very young and inexperienced Radlett side turned up to Harrow full of hope. An extremely nice ground with a quality wicket and a lightning fast outfield had all the ingredients for a thrilling high-scoring game.
Unfortunately, Radlett came out on the losing side, but each and every player will have learned from this game.
With captain Brendan Jones winning the toss, by calling Tails, he elected to bat first.
Tej Malde and Shabbir ‘The Bangladeshi International’ Foyez opened up the batting. Shabs came and went all too quickly given out LBW by Don Guerinni to a ball that kept low. This brought debutant Jamie Sidlin to the crease. Looking slightly nervous at the start, Jamie was lucky not to be out when bowled by a no-ball. Following the reprieve, Jamie showed that he has an exquisite cover drive in his locker, scoring all eight of his runs through there. Jamie was bowled bringing Dan Cohen, promoted to number four, to the crease. However, Dan’s batting didn’t live up to anything, scoring only four runs. Once Cohen was out, caught attempting a leg-glance off the first ball of the first-change bowler’s spell, Lee Greenland came to the crease. Lee faced only one delivery when he was triggered LBW, slightly contentiously. However, he was involved in the run-out of Tej Malde, who had looked very comfortable in his twenty-eight while attempting the fourth run of an all-run-four. These two wickets brought Rob Millard, batting lower down at number six for some middle-order stability, and captain Brendan Jones to the crease. Rob batted quite brilliantly and truly deserved a fifty that he ultimately didn’t get. Showing just how strong he is on the off-side, Rob punished anything wide or short but defended the good balls, batting extremely sensibly and showing his experience. Brendan was given out LBW, by the same umpire that gave out Lee, again with some unhappiness. Jones’ wicket brought fourteen-year-old all-rounder Harry Copley out to the middle, to partner Millard. Copley batted beautifully, punishing the bad deliveries and defending the good ones. Copley showed great potential, and surely, in the not too distant future, Copley will be batting much higher up the order in both Saturday and Sunday cricket. Once Copley departed for an excellent twenty-two, Luke Paice, mongoose and all, came to the crease. Paice scored five before being stumped. Simeon Cohen joined Millard at the crease and set about trying to get Radlett, still scoring at five runs per over but now eight wickets down, to a defendable total. Cohen and Millard batting excellently together, rotating the strike as much as possible but still looking to punish the bad balls to the boundary. Cohen S batted magnificently, far better than his older brother, for his twenty-seven, his highest score for Radlett. He showed that he, like Copley, can bat higher in the order. Simeon was dismissed, bringing last man Harry Will out to join Millard for the final wicket. Millard was the last man out, trying to give a final late charge to the innings, but was caught on the boundary for fourty-two, only eight short of a very well-deserved fifty. Radlett ended on 174ao, with Harry Will finishing on 0*.
After tea, which was enjoyed by all, Radlett set about trying to defend a low total on a pitch where 300 would be gettable.
Captain Jones decided that Dan Cohen, having failed with the bat, would open the bowling uphill and Luke Paice, with his left-arm seam, would open the bowling downhill. Paice struggled with his length and line but bowled with good pace throughout. This was shown when his first ball was very wide but very quick, hitting Cohen on the left ankle, standing at slip.
Cohen beat the bat of Harrow’s opening batsman Han on numerous occasions, before over-pitching twice and being smashed for consecutive fours.
Copley, fresh from the club tea and a chicken burger from dad, replaced Paice after three overs and bowled with wonderful control to restrict the batsmen. He picked up opener Han with a brilliant caught and bowled. With his next ball, the first ball of his following over, he bowled Harrow number 3 K Patel round his legs. Radlett started to sense that there might be a win in this match, but the key wicket was Shazad Shah. Unfortunately, Radlett couldn’t get Shah out until he’d scored fifty-nine, and effectively batted Radlett out of the game. Simeon Cohen replaced brother Dan and Harry Will replaced Copley. Simeon bowled with nice flight and a bit of spin and deserved his two wickets, one of which was a simply outstanding catch by the ninja-like Lee Greenland and cover. Harry Will also picked up two wickets, but was more expensive, although he bowled well. He removed the stubborn Shah, to another fine Greenland catch, and then bowled the Harrow sledger for his second wicket. Unfortunately, Radlett failed to pick up any more wickets, not through a lack of trying though, and Harrow won comfortably by 4 wickets.
MOM – Close call between Millard, Copley and Cohen S, but Copley probably just about shades it.
TFC – No doubt about it, Cohen D well and truly. Dreadful figures of – 9-0-50-0 from the Saturday 3rd XI opening bowler is not good enough, and he let his captain down when batting. However, to his credit, he did field well and was chirpy throughout the game trying to encourage the youngsters.
Hopefully, all will learn from this game.
