Match report Radlett young guns won a closely fought and exciting game at Chingford CC, Essex by the narrow margin of 3 runs. Having lost the toss Radlett were asked to bat on what looked like a flat batting track (300 scored by both teams the previous day) with a short boundary to one side.
The innings started badly as Rob “Padlock” Millard was well caught at slip from a good delivery. Guerrini went in at 3 and proceeded to hit two crunching shots to the boundary before unluckily dragging on a cut shot. A calmer period followed as Rhys “11 year old” Jenkins played a sensible knock, running hard in partnership with the more aggressive Nathwani until both fell with the score in the 60’s for 23 and 21 respectively. At this stage we looked in trouble and it got worse as we continued to collapse in the middle order as the older heads were dismissed. Tahsin caught by a flying middle aged man at mid off. Heads began to drop and wickets continued to fall, but Lee Greenland played a fantastic knock of 76, which included 11 boundaries. He ushered the lower order well and was supported well by Luke Paice for a period and latterly by Simeon Cohen for a 10th wicket partnership of 50..ish! Greenland farmed the strike well and Simeon was strong in defensive to take us to a competitive 191.
Luke Paice (2-25) and Kushal Malde (4-38) were the chief destroyers with the ball, but it was an all round excellent fielding performance that won us the game. Chingford were quickly 2 down as Guerrini held a low one-handed catch behind the stumps off Malde and was followed up immediately by Paice who found the edge and the catch was held high and one-handed at gully by Nathwani. Spirits were high and there was lots of energy in the field. Simeon dismissed their big left-hander, well held again by Tahsin at square-leg. However, the game turned once more as Fletcher and Piper took the score beyond 100 with 7 wickets in hand and 20 overs to go. With the spinners not looking threatening skipper Nathwani introduced Greenland and Will into the attack. Both bowled with control but without luck until Greenland had Fletcher trapped lbw. This proved to be the turning point (again). With victory only looking likely through bowling out the opposition, Paice and Malde came back on and bowled with menace to pick up 4 wickets in 4 overs with the outstanding Guerrini pouncing to claim another 3 catches. A series of dot balls put the pressure back on Chingford and Will picked up the 9th wicket in over 43 as their no.9 slashed a ball to the waiting Nathwani at fly slip. “Padlock” came on for a solitary over and bowled well while trying to knock out their no.11 with a beamer! Chingford went into the last over needing 7 runs to win. Will bowled with excellent control and with 2 balls remaining they attempted a suicidal 2nd run and it was only fitting that MOM Greenland ran out the batsman with an accurate throw to Guerrini who whipped off the bails and sparked celebrations in the field.
