Match report This match showed the variability of the opposition in this league. We were well beaten by a strong Stevenage team last week and this week beat weaker opposition comprehensively by 166 runs. Our focus and attitude was better this week, especially with an energetic fielding performance. We recruited Phil Simmons at the last minute which gave us a full team, leaving Bernie and Piero for other duties.
After winning the toss on the hottest day of the year so far, Brendan Jones decided to bat. It was good to have Ben Thornhill in the team and he opened positively with Marcus Freeman, putting on a 43 run opening partnership in the first 6 overs before Marcus was well caught to a low catch at cover off a full toss.. After a couple of loose early shots, Ben settled to play a quality innings, helping debutant James Stowell early on as he amassed 31 fairly quick runs . Ben retired on 50, allowing Lee Greenland to come in with the team scoring at 6 an over. Lee had time to play himself in against some good and accurate spin bowling, but the run rate was slowing. We could, as a club, play spin bowling better. Harry Copley added more urgency with good running and quick singles but when he fell cheaply we had a mid order collapse and 6 wickets fell fairly rapidly. Lee times the ball nicely and scored 45 important runs but it looked like we would have to accept a score of only180 after such a good start.
However Tome Blazevski showed he can bat with a couple of quick fours and Phil Simmons once again showed he can bat straight, hitting two glorious straight sixes and this time staying there to score 25 not out. Tome fell for 15 allowing Ben to return and help marshall the last 2 overs with Phil so that we scored a useful 50 runs in the last 5 overs.
Ben was volunteered to wicket keep as a reward for his 50.
234 should be enough but the wicket was playing well and our bowlers needed to start well. Phil and Tome did just that. In his 2nd match this season, Phil showed better pace and has been accurate, conceding few runs. Tome is slightly less consistent; going for more runs, but swings the ball and has taken wickets this season. Tome struck first, Marcus taking a brilliant one handed catch at cover. Lee took a skied catch soon after, a good catch looking into the sun. Tome took his 3rd wicket with the score in the 30s. Phil’s 6th over brought him 2 wickets, both bowled, and he finished with figures of 2 for 8 runs, Tome 3 for 26., and Frogmore were struggling at 36 for 5.
Next came Harry Copley and Luke Paice. Frogmore still had 2 good batters to remove, but they could barely score against this pair. Luke is quick and took 2 wickets for 10, whilst Harry took a wicket and only went for 4 runs in his 4 overs. Marcus was inspired in the field today executing a sharp run out with Ben, and Frogmore were 47/9. Their last pair put on 19 before Rob Millard made up for his golden duck with the last wicket.
Many thanks to Brendan for captaining so well, and Piero for his umpiring. The women won as well on the top ground so a good Sunday for Radlett at Cobden Hill.
