Radlett CC Won by 79 runs
Match report
Sunday May 9th Radlett Development team beat Holtwhites Trinibis 79 runs
On a cold and windy Sunday both teams had struggled with availability but both had persevered such that the fixture went ahead. Thanks to William Wright for stepping in to replace an injured Simeon Cohen, at very short notice.
Holtwhites Trinibis are a friendly team that made us very welcome. This was their first match in this league and they played it in the right spirit. They only had 10 players and asked to bowl.
Radlett had , I thought, a potentially weak batting line up but we started in positive fashion with Marcus Freeman and Will Wright scoring at over 5 runs an over. Marcus had hit a lovely 4 to midwicket when he tried to repeat the shot and was bowled for 12 to a slightly fuller ball. At 29 in the 6th over, I was fairly happy with our start. I had seen debutant Jaimin Patel bat really well for the under 14s on Friday, but today he was out for a golden duck to a very good catch. He will do well in the future and made up with some excellent fielding later. Unfortunately the effervescent Lee Greenland also fell for a duck and suddenly we were 30/3.
In came our Mr reliable with the bat , Brendan Jones, and he proceeded to score briskly with a good variety of shots, and a tricky predicament soon changed with Brendan contributing 35 runs of a 71 run partnership still at over 5 runs an over. Will Wright at the other end had given no chances and was doing just what a team needs to win a cricket match, staying there hitting the bad ball, and taking the pressure off the incoming batters.
Johnnie Armitage came in next and hit some lusty blows for a rapid 29, including an enormous 6, before becoming the leg spinners 2nd victim. We do need to practise against such spin bowling as Newman was doing well and we had trouble getting him away except for one over when Will scored 3 fours.. Will fell having reached his 50, but we were going to beat my target of 180 runs.
Shabir Foyez played as intelligently as normal to keep the middle order scoring and Brandon Lewis came in to show what a promising cricketer he is. He hit a 6 and six 4s in an undefeated 41 whilst Khalil Osman joined the action at the other end, undefeated on 19. 247 is an excellent score and HT were a bit shell shocked initially but decided not to give up but go at us in reply.
So with 20 on the scoreboard after 2 overs we had to continue our previous level of performance. Tome Usually gets wickets in these matches made the initial breakthrough soon followed by the rapid Brandon Lewis bowling the number 3 for a duck. However, HT continued with their aggression and always scored at a good rate, with wickets only falling gradually.
Tome got a second in his 6 over spell and Khalil also secured a wicket in his 1st over and we were always going to win. But HT kept fighting, Brendan got a spinner’s wicket and John Armitage removed the dangerous opener. When all seem finished their captain started hitting the ball to all parts of the ground including 3 sixes. Time for Brandon to come on and he duly bowled the captain for a fighting 31.
79 runs is a comprehensive victory but there were periods where it could have changed quite easily and this was a victory against a pretty good team who will win games in this league.
The team spirit is already excellent. Many thanks to Shabs for keeping wicket with kid’s gloves, to Brendan for his contributions to this team and to Piero for umpiring in the freezing cold.
Exams are with us and it can be difficult to get a team out, but hopefully availability will improve when it is realized that this is a great team to play for!
