Radlett CC Sunday II v Wanstead on Sun 18 Apr 2010 at 14:00
Radlett CC Won by four wickets
Match report
.
This game, a 40 over friendly between RCC's Sunday 2nd XI and Wanstead CC 2nd XI, was played on RCC's bottom ground, since Middlesex CCC II were playing Herts CCC on the top ground. Not surprisingly, the pitch was rather slow. The afternoon was dry, with white clouds mixed with sunshine. The RCC side contained five new faces, an encouraging sign on a day when the 1st XI game was cancelled due to poor RCC availability. Nick Fielden, RCC's captain, lost the toss, and WCC chose to bat first.
Nick Fielden shared out the 40 overs of the WCC innings among eight players, so several bowlers had only four overs in which to make their mark. Arif Rahman delivered his overs tidily and economically, while Brandon Lewis bowled his first spell briskly but a little erratically. WCC reached 43 - 0 at the end of eight overs. Shabbir Foyez and Jon Armitage followed, Jon breaking the opening stand by clean bowling Bassaidien, WCC’s No 1, with the third ball of his first over, which finished as a wicket maiden. The WCC score after 16 overs was 80 – 1, maintaining their scoring rate at 5 runs per over. Simeon Cohen and John Barr were RCC’s third pair of bowlers. Simeon’s second ball tempted WCC’s No 2, K Singh, to pull the ball high to very deep square leg. RCC’s Gwilym Jones raced to his right to take a superb diving one-handed catch only inches from the ground. At 24 overs, WCC’s score had reached 109 – 2. Ben Lewis and Gwilym Jones continued the bowling, each taking a couple of wickets in their respective 6- and 5-over spells. Brandon and Shabbir returned afterwards to complete RCC’s 40 overs. Brandon again had some problems with his direction, but he clean bowled WCC’s No 8 with the final ball of the innings.
Extras were 6 NB, 18 W, 5 B, 1 LB. Josh Charles kept wicket very well, getting across rapidly to collect some quite wide deliveries as well as achieving a stumping off Ben Lewis’ bowling.
By the time that RCC’s innings began, clouds had obscured the sun for the rest of the day, and the breeze seemed to have gathered strength. It became steadily cooler and dimmer as the innings progressed. Gwilym Jones and Ben Lewis opened the innings against the new ball. They reached 47 off WCC’s first 8 overs, helped by nine wides from WCC’s opening pair. WCC’s first two change bowlers were more accurate and economical. Gwilym (31) was caught at deepish mid-on in the 14th over with the score on 58. John Barr and Jon Armitage followed fairly quickly, taking the score to 76 – 3 during over 18. Ben Charles then joined Ben Lewis in a stand of 33. Ben Lewis (43) was LBW in over 24, WCC’s sixth bowler’s first over. He was replaced by Nick Fielden, who began to increase the scoring rate, supported by Ben Charles. Nick (27 in 32 minutes) was bowled in over 32 at a score of 162 – 6. Shabbir Foyez was run out by an optimistic call from non-striker Ben Charles for what would have been an extremely quick single. This made the score 163 – 7, with 31 runs needed from 6.5 overs. In twilight conditions, Josh Charles came in at No 8, and Ben improved the target scoring rate by taking 10 from the remaining five balls of over 33. The brothers’ partnership added the balance of runs required for victory. Ben’s contribution to the total was a very competent 43 not out.
Extras were 3 NB, 11 W, 19 B, 6 LB. A large proportion of the byes came from fast balls bowled wide of the stumps, and even wider of the WCC wicketkeeper. The contrast with the number of byes in the WCC innings illustrates the good job which Josh Charles did behind the stumps for RCC. It is interesting to note that the scores after 24 overs in both innings was 109. So although both sides scored quite quickly up to that point, RCC pulled away convincingly in the later stages of their innings.
