Radlett CC 5th XI v Reed lll on Sat 04 Sep 2010 at 12.30
Radlett CC Won by 27 runs
Match report
PROMOTION then. This was the unexpected result of Radlett fifths' Division 11 season that started with an abject defeat at Frogmore, the eventual runners-up, and finished with a 27-run success over Reed III at Queens' School, Bushey.
So Radlett V became the second fifth side to reach Division 10 after Knebworth Park V's three seasons at this level until 2007. The victory was Radlett's 10th in 12 games, including a walkover against lowly Southgate Adelaide III, a likely win in any case. The incredible sprint finish burnt off all challengers, including Hatfield Crusaders II.
The reason for the strong final burst had more to do with how the fixtures panned out than players increasing their inspiration, but a dominant draw against Crusaders in July underlined Radlett's strength before the trimming of Reed, third place finishers.
Radlett needed seven points to be sure of promotion when Charlie Randall won the toss and batted. A total of 155 or more was required for certainty, but Reed's feared new-ball attack reduced the score to 52 for five amid jangling nerves.
Typically this season somebody always seemed to step up to the plate in a side that batted deep. This time Andy Griffiths, with a superbly judged 60, and Rob Millard put on 80 for the sixth wicket, and a rapid 21 by Ben Kohler on his debut took Radlett to 168, a good score on a sluggish pitch taking plenty of spin.
Through the season nine players contributed fifties, just one each and no more, which is an unusual statistic and a contrast to 2009 when Tom Clare dominated the batting in his first season.
Though Clare was absent at a wedding on Saturday, Jim Clarke stepped in with his experience, and Griffiths produced the goods with some searing drives and excellent defence.
Radlett's bowling was a little patchy, and a rash of dropped catches did not help, but Simeon Cohen again made the main breakthrough, taking three important wickets, and fellow left-arm spinner Randall snapped up two. Pete Wharton, the new manager of Harefield United, finished well ahead as the season's leading bowler with 25 wickets.
So the Radlett 5ths versus Pirton 1st XI match on the top pitch at Cobden Hill on Sept 18 will turn into a promotion party. Everyone is welcome, especially those who played for the fifths during the season.
