Southgate Compton ll v Radlett CC 5th XI on Sat 28 Aug 2010 at 1.00
Radlett CC Won by 7 wickets
Match report
A confident seven-wicket victory over lowly Southgate Compton II enhanced Radlett V's promotion prospects dramatically in Division 11. Their advantage in fourth place over the fifth team widened to 24 points after Hatfield Crusaders' hopes of victory were cut short by rain at sixth-placed Botany Bay III.
That means Charlie Randall's men need seven points from their final game at Queens' School, Bushey, on Saturday Sept 4. The drawback is that the opposition will be Reed III, probably the best side in the division, with due respect to champions Hitchin III. All this assumes that only one Herts club will be relegated from the HCPL top division, which looks likely enough. Radlett would become the second fifth team (after Knebworth Park a few years ago) to enter Division 10 if they were to succeed, a major achievement for a development set-up.
Serious rain did arrive at Cockfosters -- but only after Lee Greenland had seen Radlett through to victory with a mature innings. It was a good toss to win as the match finished quite early after Compton were dismissed for 95. Their last pair put on 22 to frustrate the bowlers until a misjudgment was punished by Tom Clare, yet again outstanding in the field, with a sharp run-out.
The bowling was a little inconsistent, though Luke Paice, 14, posed a real threat with his speed on a soft pitch. If a slip catch had been held, offered by their prolific captain Keith Walker, the end might have arrived quite quickly. As it happened, introduction of Simeon Cohen's left-arm spin to the attack changed the picture. Walker was bowled for 27 pushing forward and six wickets fell for 18 runs. Saleem Khawaja, a youth parent, deserves a mention for stepping in as a late registration after many years of very little cricket, picking up a caught-and-bowled victim.
Compton had won fair and square last year, mocking the table, and so Radlett had no intention of suffering a repeat. The final Saturday will be a test of nerve and, assuming availability in the whole club is good, there is no reason why the fifths cannot finish their season in style.
