Radlett CC 5th XI v Old Albanians lll on Sat 21 Aug 2010 at 1.00
Radlett CC Won by 3 wickets

Match report Simeon Cohen, 14, took his first hat-trick in adult cricket before Radlett V completed a three-wicket win over Old Albanians III at Queens' School Bushey to remain in fourth place in Division 11.

This was Radlett's eighth win in 10 games, including a conceded fixture, and probably their worst performance of the campaign, though Cohen's 5-22 and hat-trick was an obvious highlight. As Charlie Randall had decided to insert the opposition, a draw or defeat would have effectively tipped them out of the promotion race, and a laborious, nerve-racking victory was only achieved with a ball to spare.

Albanians, just above the relegation fringe, exploited some loose seam bowling to score 165 for nine, a good total on a slow, responsive pitch. The score could have been much higher, as the OAs had sailed to 129 for two before Cohen's left-arm spin was called into the attack,.

A calm run-out by Lee Greenland broke a good third-wicket stand, and Cohen ended Amin's excellent innings on 54 next ball with a stumping by Jim Clarke, the batsman collapsing in a heap with a twisted ankle while trying to regain his ground. In his fourth over Cohen collected three wickets in a row through a stumping and two clean-bowled victims playing defensive shots, a satisfying way to complete a hat-trick.

With Tony Johnson holding a fine catch at long-on, wickets tumbled -- six for nine runs -- until a tail-end recovery took the score to reasonable heights. The 166 target was gettable if the run-makers could apply themselves against some tidy seam-bowling, but Radlett's reply hit the rocks at 90 for six. Why so many batsmen failed was something of a mystery -- perhaps something to do with the bowling malaise.

Even Cohen, returning from a broken collarbone, bowled more bad deliveries than usual -- apart from his hat-trick. But his stock ball was exceptional when he could land it, suggesting there might be many many wickets ahead for him in his career, and perhaps hat-tricks too.

Shabbir Foyez and Andy Griffiths tried to do the 'hard yards' in reply, but a middle order collapse hit Radlett's hopes hard. Then Rob Millard and Randall put on 61 for the seventh wickets in 14 overs to tilt the balance again, and Millard stayed at the crease to guide the team home, with five needed off the final over.

It was a very good game, but an uncomfortable experience for Radlett, who left the ground still in the promotion race... just.
