Radlett CC 5th XI v Hertingfordbury ll on Sat 31 Jul 2010 at 1.00
Radlett CC Won by 67 runs

Match report
A fine 77 by Shabbir Foyez, perhaps one of the best innings of his life, set Radlett V up for a 67-run win over Hertingfordbury II at Queens' School Bushey. This tussle between promotion candidates proved unexpectedly one-sided.

Radlett seemed well under strength in the batting, though the youth newcomers -- Luke Paice, Kushal Malde and Harry Copley -- acquitted themselves very well with the ball. As a result of this sixth win in eight games the gap between fifth-placed Radlett and the last promotion slot narrowed to 12 points.

The school strip was very dry but speedier than usual, which left Charlie Randall in a quandary on winning the toss. The decision to bat relied on determined run-making in very helpful conditions for bowling and, thanks to Foyez, Radlett's total of 159 looked formidable.

Foyez picked off any wayward new-ball deliveries unerringly and dug in to defy some dangerous middle innings bowling. The opening stand of 66 with Jim Clarke provided a perfect platform. Acceleration was fraught with problems on a pitch offering substantial turn, but runs were garnered sensibly by the Bangladeshi and Tom Clare, in particular, after Clarke was bowled driving.

From 149 for three wickets understandably started to fall when quick runs were sought, and it was clear that Hertingfordbury would have to bat extremely well for victory. The fact that their star batsman Simon Harley suffered back spasms and could only hobble left them with a near-hopeless task if Radlett could bowl accurately. This they did.

Paice, as his name would suggest, bowled his left-arm seamers very fast for a 14 year-old, and his six overs cost only eight runs, four of which came from a snick through a gap in the slips. Malde's economy would have been even more impressive if Ender Tahsin hadn't kicked kicked a boundary from 30 yards mistiming a sliding stop. Copley, the fourth left-armer used, held a slip catch and clean-bowled two victims later on.

Arif Rahman took two wickets in a hostile spell and might have had several more. After a rare Rahman full-toss, Foyez called over something like "habby tippity pippity" which was presumably Bangla for something rude or possibly encouraging. Whatever it meant, Rahman tore in for the next ball and clean-bowled an opener. Randall's ban on foreign languages in the team was immediately suspended.

Randall himself took a couple of overs to find his length, but he soon reduced the Hertingfordbury innings to a wreckage with some prodigious turn. One innocuous delivery was patted by the stricken Harley first ball to Foyez at short extra, and a satisfying victory soon followed with almost nine overs to spare.
