Radlett CC 5th XI v Hertford lV on Sat 19 Jun 2010 at 1.00
Radlett CC Won by 7 wickets

Match report Stand-in skipper Tom Clare inspired Radlett V to a convincing seven-wicket win against Hertford IV, their second Division 11 success in as many weeks.

It was a cold and gloomy day at Queens' School Bushey and with the loss of five players during the week, including captain Charlie Randall for an eye operation the previous day, along with leading wicket taker Pete Wharton, rospects looked ominous. The team was even unable to find a full set of bails until James Clarke dug spares out of his tardis-like kit bag.

Having won the toss and inserted, Radlett went in search of early wickets, but the frequent edges were evading the slips and flying to the short third-man boundary in what was a testing opening spell by Harry Will and Rob Millard.

With 12 overs gone, Hertford were making steady if unspectacular progress, so Clare decided to change things, bringing on Dean Caplin, who once again did his best Graeme Swann impression to strike in his first over. Although this was four balls later than he had hoped, having been on a hat-trick from last week.

Clare, having grown in confidence with his tactical master stroke, proceeded to place himself exactly where the ball went, bagging three neat catches. This inspirational fielding really rubbed off on the team, who kept the pressure on Hertford, making them work hard for every run. The pressure eventually told, leading to the run-out of their captain and most dangerous batsmen. Although their captain did try to sacrifice his much younger batting partner until it was pointed out that they had not crossed.

Ruan Louw then started to work his way through Hertford’s brittle middle order, finding the edge with what seemed every other ball, ending with figures of 4-53. It was only some big hitting from their number eight that got Hertford up to a total of 165.

The Radlett innings started slowly, with some tight bowling restricting the score to eight off the first six overs, but with 48 overs to get the runs there was no need to take risks. The opening pair saw off the new ball with an edge from Clarke being the only chance offered in Radlett’s first 50-run opening stand of the season. Then captain marvel came to the crease, putting on a brisk 79-run partnership with Clarke that took Radlett close to victory. Clarke departed soon after Clare for a well paced 58, the highlight being a straight drive into the tennis court in an over that he smashed for 17 runs.

Johnny Armitage and Lee Greenland came to the crease to finish the job in what was a great team performance, especially given the loss of key players.

Charlie Randall notes: "The boys didn't miss their captain in the slightest. Jim Clarke made himself available overnight to make sure we had 11 men, and he turned up trumps. This was a really excellent team performance that puts us in the promotion mix."
