Waltham X Rosedale lll v Radlett CC 5th XI on Sat 12 Jun 2010 at 1.00
Radlett CC Won by 41 runs
Match report
A splendid hard-hit 83 by Johnny Armitage set Radlett IV up for their second Division 11 win of the season as they trimmed Waltham Cross Rosedale III by 41 runs with 14 overs to spare at Cheshunt.
Armitage, 16, hit the loose ball with tremendous power on an all-weather pitch that was not a batting paradise. No other batsman was able to establish himself, with the experienced pair Andy Griffiths and Ruan Lowe playing no more than supporting roles.
Armitage fell to a leading edge return catch, fourth out with the score on 141 in the 21st over. The only blot had been an easy early chance at extra cover, and his shot selection improved after that scare so that his maiden fifty became almost a formality. The middle order and tail then found ways of dismissing themselves off some wayward bowling, and only Dean Caplin managed to find some runs before the final wicket fell in the 32nd over at 190.
Waltham Cross, having elected to field first, found themselves with 58 overs in hand to chase victory and they reached 71 for one at a brisk pace before Louw and Peter Wharton began to make inroads. The fielding was excellent for this level, and Rob Millard held what will presumably be the finest catch of the year, running and diving at mid-on to hold a catch left-handed as it flew low past him. When Charlie Randall ran out the main batsman with a slick under-arm from midwicket, the home chances disappeared.
Shabbir Foyez achieved what he thought was a fine leg-side stumping and was congratulating the bowler when the square-leg umpire pointed out that he would have given it out if the bails had been removed. Caplin was brought into the attack as the Radlett momentum faltered and he picked up the last two wickets to complete a memorable day for him.
Though a strong side did not really do themselves justice, this welcome win moved Radlett up to mid-table with a chance of mounting a promotion challenge.
