Radlett CC 5th XI v Hitchin lll on Sat 05 Jun 2010 at 1.00
Radlett CC Lost by 3 wickets

Match report Tom Clare hit his first Division 11 fifty of the season to follow up a victory in his local snooker doubles championship the previous evening, but Radlett V went down narrowly to the league leaders Hitchin III at Queens' School, Bushey.

Clare, one of the division's top run-scorers last year, was hampered by a blow to his left big toe for the second time in three weeks and finished the game with blood seeping through his socks. He had already faced down danger at snooker when his doubles partner Pete Wharton tried a violent double on yellow and sent the ball flying off the table.

Radlett are struggling, though their campaign is not quite as forlorn as the lower mid table position might indicate. The three defeats have been against the top three sides, and the sole victory has been the upsetting of St Albans IV, in fifth place. Only time will tell whether Radlett are strong enough to trim the more lowly teams.

Radlett were up and down all through a lovely hot day that was enhanced by a superb tea created and delivered by Martin and Jane Saunders. Hitchin avoided eating too many of the double cream and jam scones as they were left with only 43 overs to overtake Radlett's 193-8, but they were gifted a flying start when Rob Millard could not control his swing against a left-hander in the opening over. The first ball flew down the leg side for four byes, and the score stood at 18 when Pete Wharton started the second over.

Far from applying pressure, Radlett bowled loosely, and the score roared past 70 off 10 overs, leaving Hitchin an easy tempo for victory without any pressure on a baked, slow pitch. The picture changed when Dean Caplin broke a long second-wicket partnership with his first delivery, a leading edge to midwicket.

Hitchin cruised more slowly to 150 for two, but Charlie Randall found his length with left-arm spin and made another break-through. Two smart stumpings by Shabbir Foyez, punishing batsmen for walking into their shots, started a minor collapse, and there would have been eight wickets down with 10 runs needed if a Randall delivery had not passed over the top of a tail-ender's middle stump first ball.

Randall finished with 5-34, and Hitchin won comfortably enough as to be expected of a stronger side. Radlett had to spend too much time playing catch-up cricket and did not set an intimidating total.

Radlett lost their first two wickets in successive balls in the day's third over when Ender Tahsin gloved a lifter and Lee Greenland mis-timed a forward prod to loop a return catch. Clare and Andy Griffiths repaired the damage, but another rush of wickets left the score at 122-5, with the 220 target a distant dream.

Randall, after offering two dropped slip catches for 45 not out, and Foyez, having survived an enormous whahoo first ball, repaired the damage and took the score to a respectable level.
