Match report Radlett V gained their first Division 11 win of the season with a five-wicket success over St Albans IV on a dry, treacherous pitch at Verulam School sports ground. The victory completed the full hand of five out of five for the club, though this game was the first to finish.

A weak St Albans side were put in to bat and were bowled out for 83, and Radlett's reply was lackadaisical on a surface producing occasional shooters and the odd kicking delivery. Batting was difficult enough without three upper order wickets falling to careless shots before Shabbir Foyez weighed in with 24 not out as the bowling tired.

Radlett's new ball attack posed problems, especially Arif Rahman's left-armers. He claimed a wicket in his first over, a miscued drive well held by the diving Lee Greenland, and run-making became a laborious business. On the day Rahman enjoyed little luck, and Rob Millard was the bowler who picked up wickets, including a skier nicely held by wicketkeeper Marcus Freeman.

Peter Wharton, first change, took a wicket in his first over and then bowled the main St Albans resistance, Nick James, for 41 with a shooter. A couple of daft run-outs and a snick off Johnny Armitage brought the innings to a close in the 34th over.

In reply Radlett scored freely while losing wickets. There was a wobble when the score slipped to 44 for four, but Tom Clare and Foyez batted sensibly. When Clare was caught in the slips off a kicking ball, Rahman calmly helped his fellow Bangladeshi in the winning partnership.

The win meant the league start was an improvement on last year, and the team seems much stronger, on paper at least. But until the senior batsmen show more resolve progress will be difficult.
