Radlett CC 5th XI v Cheshunt ll on Sat 08 May 2010 at 1.00

Match report
THE unexpected climax to a bitterly cold and wet day proved to be a cliff-hanger draw as the fifths fought off Cheshunt 2nd XI's victory charge at Queens School in Division 11.
Cheshunt, with 46 overs to overtake Radlett's 127, needed 12 to win off the last two overs, but Charlie Randall conceded only three runs and in the final over Pete Wharton allowed only four singles in his first four balls before a nice catch on the short long-off boundary by Ender Tahsin prevented the winning six and left the visitors still one big hit short of their target. Wharton took his reward with another wicket next ball.
Radlett again did not bat well on a soggy pitch, but even their eventual total should have been enough for victory as the surface began to dry out in the final hour, giving Randall help with his left-arm spin.
Randall took 3-18 off 16 overs, figures that would have been improved if a couple of upper-order batsmen had not been let off, but Tom Clare, Robert Millard and Tahsin clung on to important catches to keep Radlett in the game.
Cheshunt decided to field first in drizzle and gamely stayed out while Radlett made a good start, reaching 100 with only two wickets down. Clare and Lee Greenland, the mainstays, perished to full tosses, and a mixture of poor shot selection and bad luck from the rest of the order left the side well short of dominance. By the time the drizzle stopped eight wickets had disappeared for 27 runs. The Cheshunt opening bowler Stewart Gough finished with 8-52 and would have won the game with a six if Tahsin's safe hands had not decided otherwise.
In reply Millard, making an impressive debut after a gap of 11 years since his colts days, struck twice, and the Cheshunt scoring was slowed to a crawl by Wharton and Randall. In such grim conditions the match turned out exciting and probably more disappointing for Radlett than Cheshunt. Neither side looked equipped to join the promotion race.
Note: If anyone lost a pair of cricket trousers, Charlie Randall has found them. 07770 382127
