Radlett CC Won by 3 runs

Match report Radlett 4th XI v Hatfield 26th June 2010

Funny old game cricket isn’t it? We won this game by 3 runs, which sounds like a well-matched interesting game. It was.
Radlett badly needed to get 30 points to re-establish contact with the front runners in the division, at this stage nothing less would suffice, but on the hottest day of the year, captain Richard Hardy made the only sane decision on winning the toss, which was to bat.
And bat they did. Dom Ingram rediscovered his mojo, and with Colin Warne (35) put on an effortless 91 from the first 27 overs, when Ingram gave his wicket away having made 61 of them. 91-1. Our target was 240 minimum, batting looking so easy. But the statistic of the last 18 wickets falling for 247 runs would not substantiate that assertion. Softy made a bristling 27, but only Will Wild and Alan Armitage (who struck a beautiful straight 6) made double figures.
We lost our last 8 wickets for 25 runs. What a funny game – but not for us. Morale was obviously below sea level. When we had expected to declare at a big 200, we didn’t even reach 51 overs on what looked like a great batting strip.
So the only thing to do was bowl them out. Fat chance, yet we did, despite missing several very catchable catches.
My opinion, for what it’s worth, might not be correct, but I have the typewriter, so here it is:
1. We bowled brilliantly – in parts.
2. We had Colin Warne keeping wicket.
3. The side never lost hope.

Hardy opened the bowling with Neil Lederman, who bowled with pace and menace, and Neil’s younger brother Ben, a Bambi of a cricketer, who could be even better than his brother. They each took an early wicket, both bowled, and both almost unplayable deliveries.
On this wicket?
This gave us belief. 10 – 2.
But after 32 overs we had run through our options. Hatfield were cruising, and Neil, our most dangerous bowler had pulled a fetlock from sheer effort, leaked 16 runs from his last painful over, and Softy had had to leave the ground.
Ten men, very few points in the bag, only a win, however improbable would do. Meeps, our go-to bowler, was ineffective…but look!
Hardain, our best fielder, and surely one of the very best in the club, took a horrible catch with ridiculous ease. And Ben Lederman must take enormous credit for catching a tough catch.
And then Colin Warne manufactured a stumping from nothing – a truly brilliant stumping that changed the thinking of both sides. We could now win this, and we did.
Hardain came back on to take two and finish with 3-29, and Hemal Malde had the last man dropped with 4 to win, decided not to rely on fielders, and summarily knocked out his off stump to win the game for us.
Cue elation for Radlett, despair for Hatfield. But still now hope for a top 4 place for Softy’s Side.
If they can get Colin Warne to keep wicket, there definitely is hope.
